My Basic On-Page SEO Tips For Websites & Blogs

I have been operating websites and blogs now for a few years and over that time have seen a lot of advice on SEO from the “so-called” experts who will optimise things for you for a cost, but for many like myself its reasonable easy to get the basic on-page SEO done and get reasonable results.

Performing Content Optimisation

When it comes to optimising your content, there are a few things you want to keep in mind.

Make sure your target keyword is in your post

Your posts title should include the Keyword.

The URL will typically include the post title, but if not make sure the keyword is included.

Your post should include a heading with your keyword, one of your keywords should be in bold and another in italics.

Sprinkled around in your content (about 2-3 times for every 500 words) with the keyword mentioned within the first sentence. In the case of this post I have selected on-page SEO as the keyword and have ensured it is within the opening sentence. I also try to use a similar keyword to ensure it looks natural so in this case I would use in-word SEO as an alternative.

Ensure your content is at least 400+ words long and preferably 500+ words.

Try and use at least one relevant image and/or one relevant video for every content and when adding to your article add your keyword as the “alt” text for that image. When you got to “insert” the image you’ll see a place that says “alt” text where you add this.

Optimize your meta information

Make sure you always optimize your meta information for your target keyword.

The Meta information is what tells Google what your content is about and also what shows up in Google.

On a WordPress Site use the FREE on-page SEO tools

I like using Yoast SEO or All-in-One SEO plugin for my WordPress websites.

Both have a free basic version that help when doing on-page SEO.

Interlink your content

Whenever you post new content onto your website or blog try and insert relevant links to your other blog posts.

The reason Wikipedia dominates is because just about every other keyword is a link to other relevant content on their site and this helps the website to rank well … and it does rank well. Wikipedia is currently ranked 5th by Alexa out of all websites. Alexa which is a major source of managing website SEO information is itself only ranged 3380th of all websites which sounds a long way down the list but it’s actually very high when you consider that a blog like my personal blog for Stuart Wills is not ranked and even my main website for Auckland mortgage broker (North West Mortgages) is not ranked even though it ranks well for a number of the targeted keywords.

Don’t Forget That You Need Good Content Too

So we have discussed a little about the basics of on-page SEO which will help your website or blog be ranked better by Google and the other search engines, but the most valuable ingredient needed for getting people to your site is good quality information. People are fussy and with so much choice online now they will be critical if your information is not useful and/or not well written.

Content is king.

The main point of on-page SEO and off-page SEO is to get people to visit your website or blog without the need to spend huge amounts of money on ads.

Off-page SEO is also important and is predominantly about building links directing people (and the Google bots) to your website or blog. If you have good quality information other people may want to link to your posts just as I have linked this post to other external posts that have useful information to share. I have linked to a few sites like Wikipedia, Alexa and Yoast plus some of my other websites, and the hope is that people find this useful and will link back to this post too.

A lot of people use Social Media to link back to their posts too. I have some Facebook pages that I tend to share my posts on and one named “Small Business Ideas & Marketing” is where I share posts like this about business ideas and tips etc.
