Since the beginning of time, Religion has been an important part of life. It has given people something to hold onto when things get tough. Over the years, religion has evolved, some forms have died out, while others have gained followers. Today it’s estimated that 80% of the people in the world who believe in religion belong to one of five major churches in existence today.

Christianity – Although there are many different branches of the Christian religion, all are based on the same thing. That there is one God who fathered Jesus Christ who was sent to earth in attempt to protect humanity and to teach them about how freedom from sin would ensure them eternal life, a belief he later died for. Christianity is not the oldest religion, but at the moment, it is the most widely believed.

Judaism – The religion that has survived the longest, despite some serious opposition throughout the centuries is Judaism. When Judaism was first established it became the first known religion to worship a single God. Members of this church continue to await the arrival of the Messiah and do no believe that life ends after death, though there are no detailed descriptions of what they believe the afterlife to be like.

Islam – Islam is an ancient religion that was formed in the Middle East. The members of this congregation worship Muhammad and Allah. Islam is the second largest religion in the world.

Buddhism – Created more than 2,000 years ago, Buddhism is starting to gain worldwide followers. Individuals who follow Buddhism believe in Gautama Buddha.

Hinduism – Hinduism is one of the oldest religions and one of the only world religions that continues to worship more than one god. Hindus believe that until they are able to join their supreme god, Brahman, they continue to be reincarnated and that their actions in their current life will impact their future reincarnation.
