Best Thing I Never Had

I was recently told by someone who knows relatively little about my dating history that I just like ‘the chase'. Whilst this didn’t come as a big shock, it has brought me to the realisation that I’m far more Afraid of commitment than I thought I was. I do like the Chase, there’s no doubt about that, but until recently I thought that the chase was the fun part of getting to what I really wanted, a serious relationship. However, looking back, every time I’ve got close to the goal, I’ve shut the door. But that's what getting burnt does to a person. I spent so long putting my trust into someone who broke it repeatedly, that its left me unable to put my trust into anyone else. I’m so afraid of getting hurt, I don’t let anyone close enough to do so. Even those guys who I really liked, I never really had, I just had the chase. When there was a glimpse of something a little more serious, I ran a mile, even with He Who Must Not Be Named, the cause of all my pain. I guess I knew all along that he’d only break my heart in the end.

Crikey, what if I never settle down? Am I going to spend the rest of my life running away from what I want all because an egotistical man-whore with bad dance moves treated me like crap? I sincerely hope not. Maybe he screwed me over so badly that I'd send Noah Puckerman packing if he started getting all serious on me (yes I am aware that’s not his real name), but at least I got out. At least I’m not the poor bugger he’s marrying, and probably cheating on already. And to quote the wisest woman ever to have walked the planet….

‘Thank God you blew it
Thank God I dodged the bullet
I'm so over you.

I wanted you bad
I'm so through with it
Cause honestly you turned out to be the best thing I never had’

Beyonce Knowles (2011)
