One of my favorite places in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia is a Pond near downtown called Sullivan’s Pond. This beautiful pond is a favorite among locals and is part of the Shubenacadie Canal system which streches from the Halifax Harbour to the Bay of Fundy. Yesterday we visited both Sullivan’s Pond and the Salt Marsh Trail in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia a community in Dartmouth. I love the pond because it is so serene and beautiful and is a wonderful place to spend a few hours. Dartmouth actually has a lot to offer in the way of parks, trails, beaches and all kinds of other places to explore. Lot’s of places to take photos!
Sullivan’s Pond is a small artificial lake in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The fountain was a beautiful addition that became operational in December 2006. The Shubenacadie Canal was begun in 1826 but not completed until 1861 and was closed 10 years later in 1871 due to competition from the Nova Scotia Railway.
Last year there was a lot of construction at the entrance of the pond from at the Dartmouth Harbour end. They replaced a lot of the piping the ran under the roads and opened up a part of the water flow with a new foot bridge. This is part of what it looks like. I will be honest. I am not tall enough to get a good shot I had to go through the rungs of the bridge to get this but I love the way it turned out.
Two of the seven Emden Geese that live at Sullivan’s pond during the warmer months. Over the winter they are taken care of by Hope for Wildlife volunteers I believe if I remember correctly somewhere off site. They have been taught to to use the cross walk to safely roam the neighbourhood and go to the community center across the pond. There used to be nine geese but last year 2 were hit and killed in the crosswalk. There was a lot of people really upset and angry over the incident though the driver was never charged.
I believe these are the same two geese as the above picture but I could be wrong, between them is one of the many ducks that make the pond their summer home.
The park has some pretty flowers. I tried to get a good shot of some pink rhododendron but it was kind windy and it was hard to get it to focus.
I believe this is a pink lilac bush that was in the park surrounding the pond. I don’t remember what the plaque said but looking up pink lilac’s I would say that’s what it is. It sure smelled like lilacs.
We had a great time and really enjoyed the sunshine and warmer weather. It was only about 18°C but but it was clear and sunny with just enough clouds for a beautiful sky. I can’t wait to go back again. Since this was the weekend of birthday’s we didn’t go very far but since we will be going camping at Blomidon Provincial Park next weekend we figured that was fine.
