How to Upcycle an Altoid Tin Into a DIY Survival Kit

- Empty Altoid Tin (or similar)
- Waterproof Matches with a match box with striking surface
- Duct Tape
- Fish Hooks
- Fishing Line
- Small Piece of Cardboard
- Fishing Weights
- Bandages
- Alcohol Pads
- Small Flashlight
- Safety Pins
- Needle

- Mini Compass
- Pain Relief Tablets
- Antihistamine Tablets

- There is a little prep work you'll need to take care of before you begin loading your upcycled Altoid tin with the items you want to include.
- First, start by creating a miniature roll of duct tape by folding it onto itself and then winding it around and around. Cut your miniature roll from the main duct tape roll, then set aside.
- Next, cut a small piece of aluminum foil then fold it into the shape of an envelope. It is easier to get a true envelope shape if you start out with a square piece of foil. The envelope doesn’t have to be pretty – it's just something to keep the pain tablets together and offer a little bit of protection. Put the tablets in the envelope and set aside. Alternatively, you can buy single serve pouches and use those.
- Take your tiny rectangular piece of cardboard and cut two small triangles out of each of the shorter sides. These little cutouts will help the fishing line stay in place on the cardboard piece without slipping off and getting tangled.
- Then wind the fishing line onto the cardboard, tucking in the end when you’re done and set it aside.
- Cut the striking surface from the side of your waterproof matchbox and glue it to the inside of the Altoid tin's lid.
- Now you’re ready to start filling your tin with all of the survival items you've gathered. If you like putting together puzzles or playing Tetris, you will enjoy this task. Be strategic in your placement so that everything will fit.
- Another idea for a little added safety is to glue a small piece paper in the bottom of the tin that has name, birth date, pertinent medical information and a few emergency contact numbers written on it. Cover it with packing tape to protect it from potential water damage.
