How to Upcycle an Altoid Tin Into a Survival Kit

Do you want to create a DIY survival kit? Learn how to make one out of an upcycled Altoid tin and get ideas on how to fill it with the right supplies.

Do you love using your hands to make fun DIY gifts, but struggle when it comes to choosing DIY projects that men will love too?

You can stop looking because you've found what you've been searching for. This Diy Survival Kit made from an upcycled Altoid tin is always a big hit at any gift exchange. But it is not just a gift for men. Everyone can benefit from having a DIY survival kit on hand if they're in a survival situation.

I love that it's small enough to fit anywhere you might want to store it – in your purse, tucked into your glove box, stuck in pockets or anywhere else convenient. You can include anything in your DIY survival kit that you think would be useful to you or your gift recipient in a survival situation.

Don’t worry if you don’t have everything included in this tutorial. Most of these items were found at a local superstore. Amazon is also a great source for simple supplies like these!

You can give this thoughtful DIY gift all by itself, or you can also give it in along with various useful camping supplies, or as part of a larger household family disaster preparedness kit.

How to Upcycle an Altoid Tin Into a DIY Survival Kit

Supplies

  • Empty Altoid Tin (or similar)
  • Waterproof Matches with a match box with striking surface
  • Duct Tape
  • Fish Hooks
  • Fishing Line
  • Small Piece of Cardboard
  • Fishing Weights
  • Bandages
  • Alcohol Pads
  • Small Flashlight
  • Safety Pins
  • Needle
  • Multi Tool
  • Mini Compass
  • Pain Relief Tablets
  • Antihistamine Tablets
  • Scissors

Directions

  1. There is a little prep work you'll need to take care of before you begin loading your upcycled Altoid tin with the items you want to include.
  2. First, start by creating a miniature roll of duct tape by folding it onto itself and then winding it around and around. Cut your miniature roll from the main duct tape roll, then set aside.
  3. Next, cut a small piece of aluminum foil then fold it into the shape of an envelope. It is easier to get a true envelope shape if you start out with a square piece of foil. The envelope doesn’t have to be pretty – it's just something to keep the pain tablets together and offer a little bit of protection. Put the tablets in the envelope and set aside. Alternatively, you can buy single serve pouches and use those.
  4. Take your tiny rectangular piece of cardboard and cut two small triangles out of each of the shorter sides. These little cutouts will help the fishing line stay in place on the cardboard piece without slipping off and getting tangled.
  5. Then wind the fishing line onto the cardboard, tucking in the end when you’re done and set it aside.
  6. Cut the striking surface from the side of your waterproof matchbox and glue it to the inside of the Altoid tin's lid.
  7. Now you’re ready to start filling your tin with all of the survival items you've gathered.  If you like putting together puzzles or playing Tetris, you will enjoy this task. Be strategic in your placement so that everything will fit.

  8. Another idea for a little added safety is to glue a small piece paper in the bottom of the tin that has name, birth date, pertinent medical information and a few emergency contact numbers written on it. Cover it with packing tape to protect it from potential water damage.
