October in my garden….

I know it’s completely the wrong time of year but last weekend, I sat and made a bit of a plan for what I want my garden to look like and how I want it to be more than just a place to sit and enjoy the sun!

I thought it might be nice to try and document the progress I make out there by sharing a bit of an update every now and again so today, I’m sharing what my plan is and what the Garden looks like right now!

For years, our garden was just an outdoor playground with a 12 ft trampoline, numerous bats, balls and rackets and just about every garden game going.  We could (and did) spend hours out there in the nice weather when the kids were younger but sadly we’ve been spending less and less time out there over the last couple of Summers.

Master Frugal prefers to take a football to the field at the end of the road and kick that about with his mates these days and Miss Frugal’s only interest in the garden is when we have a family barbecue or when it’s a warm enough day to sunbathe out there.

Last Summer we gave away our trampoline to a family down the road with younger kids who were desperate for one and the garden toys have gradually disappeared too so we now have just a Big Square Patch of grass with no purpose – yet!

I should also add that it’s currently just a big square patch of grass with no purpose AND also has no Fence at the back thanks to both the strong winds we’ve just had and some not so great workmanship when the fence was originally put in!  We’re waiting for someone to come and build us a new (and much stronger fence) but all the fencers in the area are a bit busy at the moment as we apparently weren’t the only ones who had a fence trauma.

Once the new fence is in, we’ll be giving our little patch a purpose again!  We want to use the space in a completely different way than we have done in the past and if you’ve read my greenhouse or herb garden posts over the last few months then you’ll probably have a pretty good idea of where I’m going with our garden plan.

So, my plan for the greenhouse is pretty much to just get some salad leaves, garlic and some broccoli growing over the Winter. I need to do some research as to what else I can grow between now and Spring but I don’t expect there’s going to be much. I think most things will need to wait to be planted until the New Year so I’m just going to try to do what I can until then.

I also want to investigate the possibility of planting out some herbs as my little herb garden is looking a lot sadder than it was when I took the photo above.  The main ones that I want to grow are mint, basil and chives but I think the mint will need to wait till Spring.

We also plan to plant some fruit bushes and trees along the back fence of the garden – preferably in some nice pots rather than in the ground.  My plans include blackberries, raspberries, figs, apples and pears as well as grapes if that’s a possibility.

I’m not going to go out and spend a fortune all at once so don’t expect my next update to show us living a self-sufficient lifestyle only eating food we’ve grown ourselves but I do hope that, at the very least, the greenhouse plants will be sown and that we’ll have a couple of the fruit bushes we want in place.

Long term, my plan is to get a Summer House/Office installed but I suspect that’s something that’s going to have to wait a little longer!

I’ll keep you updated!
