9 Tips To Pay For College

With the average cost of colleges in the United  States being a whopping $30,000 just for tuition, it's no mystery why many people consider alternatives. This is also the reason why there are so many graduates in debt for years after they have completed their studies. Many people are oblivious when it comes to taking full advantage of the system. This list will help you optimize your options for paying your tuition and minimize your debt.

  1. Accelerated Learning

Many high schools offer Advanced Placement Credits which are transferable to colleges. Taking advantage of this can cut the cost of full semesters of college expenses. Some colleges have online courses that you can take during the summer. This may not cut tuition expenses but definitely reduces living expenses when you are a college resident.
  2. Apply for Financial Aid and Grants

Fill out the FAFSA form even if you think you are not eligible. You may qualify for more than you think. There are a few national grants that you may qualify for as well.
  3. Apply for Scholarships

Colleges, religious institutions and civic organisations often aid students with substantial amounts of funds once they fulfill certain requirements. Some require that you right essays or create a video when applying. Do not see this as extra unnecessary work. This is how they test who wants it more. Often times the topics are similar so you may be able to recycle ideas.
  4. In-State Tuition

Schools often offer lower tuition rates for students that are residents of the same state. Weigh your options and consider if this would be something you want to do. Being away from family and friends is much harder for some people.
  5. Community College

Think about going to a low rate two year college and then transferring to a 4 year college for the last two years of your undergraduate degree.
  6. Military

If you are interested in the military and tertiary education, then you would like to know that a lot of those who commit to serve can get free tuition at many institutions. Contact the military sector you are interested in for more information.
  7. Talk to your Guidance Counselor

Your guidance counselor may have certain connections that come with their position that can help students who think they may not be able to afford college.
  8. Consider Work  Study

Work study is a great way of learning about what kind of jobs you prefer to do while earning your way through college.
  9. Generate an Alternative Stream of Income

If you have any entrepreneurial skills that can help you earn money while in school eg, hairdressing, digital marketing, YouTubing etc.- it may be worth a try. Many people underestimate what it takes to start a small business and end up losing money in the process. Don't be one of these people.
