How Mindfulness Can Help You Land Your Dream Job

Replace fear with faith

Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you do have power over instead of craving control over what you don’t.

– Steve Maraboli, Life, the Truth, and Being Free

Change can be scary. Fear of the unknown prevents many of us from taking risks at work, in love and in our everyday lives. It’s easy to cling to what you’re afraid of losing, even when what you’re clinging to isn’t making you happy.

Making a career change can be especially nerve-wracking; you think to yourself: what if it doesn’t work out? What if this change makes me unhappier than I am now? Or worse, what if I lose this job and can’t pay my bills? Okay, let’s hit the pause button for a second.

Now, replace those anxious thoughts with this mantra:

We can’t know what happens in the “unknown” if we allow fear to prevent us from going there.

Think about it: does worrying ever get you anywhere? Does it feel good when you overthink everything and obsess about what you can’t control? Worrying is, in fact, the most counterproductive course of action.

Whether it’s focusing on the future or dwelling on the past, it’s important to avoid getting pulled in to these concerns and understand they are simply thoughts. They only have as much power as you give them.

Shift your mindset from future-focused worry to present-moment enthusiasm.

Start getting excited about the change. Say to yourself, “I am excited for the next chapter in my life,” rather than, “I want a new job.” Want suggests something is lacking. The small mental shift from future-focused worry to present-moment enthusiasm positively impacts your subconscious mind.

So, how can we stay connected to the present and find a dream job?

  1. Stay focused on your intention.

Being specific about how you intend to act on a goal will help you achieve it. An intention is how you plan to approach a task or experience. This is always within your control, which means it offers more solid ground to build on.

  1. Let go of limiting beliefs.

No one judges you more than you judge yourself. You can be your own worst enemy, but you need to get out of your way and start developing self-compassion. Don’t let an obsession for perfection slow you down in accomplishing your goals.  Say goodbye to “I’m not good enough.”

Rather than thinking What if I’m not qualified enough to fulfill the role? or What if I’m not a good fit? ask yourself, What’s worse: rejection or regret?

  1. Don’t allow fear to drive you away from the opportunity.

Instead, decide to let faith draw you toward it.

The beauty of life is that we don’t always know what’s going to happen. Today could be the day you sit next to the right person on the train who passes on your resume. Today could be the day you get the phone call about a job offer. We need to wake up every day ready to welcome the next incredible experience.

One of the main reasons many of us don’t take action is because we have the expectation of more time. We think, there’s no rush. I can look for a job next week. I can wait.

But before you know it, next week turns into next year, and you are in the same exact place. The truth is, we have no idea what the future holds, but we won’t reach our end goal until we take the first step.

It’s human nature to seek stability. Security feels safe. Trust me, I get it. But, when you only value security and stability, you miss out on a world of adventure and possibilities. It is only when you can have faith and embrace the unknown that you will start living the life of your dreams.
