Expectations vs Reality

‘One day you will wake up and there wont be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted to do. Do it now.’-Paulo Coelho

Sometimes we find that it is hard to block peoples opinions on what were doing in our lives, how much money we make, the career paths we choose. Sometimes we find it hard to be comfortable with ourselves and the choices that we make. We constantly seek validation from others which only leaves us confused, right?

It is good to have both expectations and standards in your life and career. They give your life structure, they give you a purpose and something to work towards constantly. Never apologise for having standards and if someone around you does not recognise or respect why you have them, let them go. Everyone will have different standards and goals in life, so don’t ever try to convince yourself that yours is too high or low.

In life, you will experience people around you telling you how to live your life and what you should do for a living. This may be family, friends, partners or complete strangers in fact. Yes, we want to do well for ourselves and create an amazing future for our families but where does it stop? When will people stop pushing you from pillar to post with the instructions on how you should live your life? The truth is, it doesn’t stop and the sooner you realise this the better. So, if you spend hours a day comparing your life to somebody else’s, the reality is, that you will lose out on happiness. It isn’t a competition and I discussed this on my first post (If you haven’t already, go and have a read).

Let me point out that success is not defined by age, race or gender nor is everyone’s definition of success going to be exactly the same. However, this can become a problem you may look around you at people you may know or your parents/partner/friends may start to compare you to someone else’s success. It may leave you thinking, that you are a failure because you haven’t achieved half of what they have achieved. It may also take a massive knock to your self- esteem and your confidence but imagine going around in circles trying to please everyone? Yes, that’s right it would be waste of time, you will probably be miserable and you’ll not be living the life that you want. Why? Because it wont ever be enough. Accomplish or meet the standards of one thing and they’ll throw another expectation in your direction to meet.

I experienced the pressure and know exactly how it feels to be told that you are not good enough or that you are not doing well enough. Hearing this would make me feel depressed and it would literally make me over think and analyse my entire life (I’m a Virgo). It wasn’t until last year that I realised that my strength is in writing and I am passionate about motivating and inspiring other people. It was difficult to take a leap and write about my life experiences but I knew that someone out there would read it and be inspired! What I learnt to do also is block out all the negativity and by doing this I was able to do what I love and really enjoy it. I took a chance on myself and now I am challenging you to do the same!

So lets do this together. Stop what your doing, take a moment, notice the silence in the room. Breathe in and breathe out very slowly. You are relaxed. Think about where you are in your life. Are you happy? Do you want to do better? Do you have any goals that you would like to conquer? If no, take this time to think about what you are passionate about or have an interest in. Write it down. Plan, prepare and execute. Start today!

I believe that everyone is blessed with a talent and whether it is in writing, music, acting or designing (to name a few). You must learn to live your truth and develop those talents. Yes, for the majority of us it wont be recognised straight away but through hard work and determination, it will.

From me to you:

You are amazing, you are authentic and original. Sometimes it may seem that others live a complete and happy life but the truth is we all have our struggles. We all are fighting a battle that nobody knows about. Continue to focus on the end goal. Keep doing what you have to do to ensure that you achieve those dreams and do not allow anyone to come between you and your success. Their opinions will not matter in the end, what matters is what you think of yourself and your happiness.

One thing that I always try to remember every morning is that time waits for nobody. It doesn’t matter how old you are, what you do for a living and how much you earn. We all have the same 24 hours in a day and it is totally up to us how we use it. Sometimes we forget that time is almost against us and we tend to put the things we are truly passionate about on hold, in order to satisfy other people or live up to their standards. Create standards of your own and live your life exactly how you would like to live it. We are all a working progress, believe in your self and you will be successful. Most importantly, you will be happy.
