Report: Explosion At New York City’s Port Authority, Suspect In Custody

At about 7:20 a.m. today, in the busy underground tunnel near both the Times Square subway station and the Port Authority Bus Terminal, someone detonated what the police are calling an “improvised low-tech explosive device.”

That someone has been identified as Akayed Ullah, a former taxi driver, who was taken into custody immediately following his failed attempt.

The explosion ended up injuring himself and three other people but nonetheless, caused chaos and fear in one of the city’s biggest and most key traffic hubs. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called the explosion an “attempted terror attack” and said there were no additional known incidents.

“Thank God the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goals. Thank God our first responders were there so quickly to address the situation,” de Blasio said. He rightfully called the situation “incredibly unsettling” for New Yorkers, nearly 6 million of whom rely on the subway for their commutes every weekday.

The incident came a mere six weeks after a truck driver deliberately drove down a bike path in lower Manhattan, killing eight people in the deadliest terror attack in New York City since Sept. 11, 2001.

Our thoughts are with those who were injured and affected by this event and hopefully operations will return to normal soon. But with that said, those who live in and around New York know that we are better than to let this affect us and that we cannot live life in fear of those who are bent on changing America. Stay strong.
