Instrument Oddities

Studying at this School gives us the opportunity to see some very strange things that come in for repairs, or simply unusual contraptions that exist for the sake of being there. I've seen clarinets bent into the letter 'S' and I've seen flutes twisted into something that resembles a bendy straw. There have been trumpets that looked shriveled and shrunken because they were left in acid, and trombones that look like they've been literally run over by a steam roller because they were so flat. Here are a couple of things that I thought were so interesting I couldn't resist taking a picture:


A lot of the instruments we work on are donated to the school. This is how a great portion of them arrive: simply tossed into the back of a pickup truck in the middle of misty, yucky weather.

This is a metal oboe. I didn't know those existed...

This used to be a tuba piston valve.

It was left in a plating machine for several hours by accident. I thought it was amazing!
