Diana Krall Quiet Nights

Tags: song

Diana Krall’s voice is legendary and for all the right reasons. She can 'put over’ a Song as well as the great singers that have gone before and she does it with her own take on classics in such a way as to make you begin to forget the originals. The songs here – 'Where or When’, 'Every Time We Say Goodbye’, 'Walk On By’ et al – are all songs that have been part of the lexicon of 'ordinary’ singers and have all suffered by the tortuous mishandling that they have received in pubs and bars around the world. What Ms Krall is doing here is to give these songs back to us in a new way and in such a manner as to erase the memory of those screeching and caterwauling triers.Just listen to her take on 'Where or When’ – a brilliant song by Rodgers and Hart but no-one ever listens to the words as a love song. Or 'I’ve Grown Accustomed To Your Face’ which we can all relate as the Rex Harrison hambone from 'My Fair Lady’; but as a burning love song and a wistful daydream of a close love? For my money the definitive version of 'Walk On By’ is was and always will be the version by Issac Hayes but this version is the first I’ve heard in years that gave me that frisson, that shiver down the back, the song is capable of. Song after song here that simply make you understand once again what the seductive appeal of the combination of bossa nova and a great song are all about. This is Diana Krall’s love letter to her husband and it is exactly what it says on the cover – ideal for quiet nights with a lover – but it is also a completely convincing collection
