Ola Paulson & John Tilbury – “Seagull Sonatas” (Konvoj Records, 2018)

“Seagull Sonatas” is another one new release of “Konvoj Records”. Album compositions were recorded by Ola Paulson (alto saxophone and plastic tube, computer processing on track 6) and John Tilbury (grand piano). These two musicians are very well-known in experimental Music and avant-garde jazz scene. Their music is based on synthesis between contemporary acadmeical music, electronics, experimental music, free improvisations, avant-garde jazz and various intonations of modern jazz styles. Huge range of colorful and innovative playing techniques, special effects, inventive musical decisions and other music language elements make an impressive and interesting sound. musicians are dedicated to create frsh and new sound by using dozens of interesting and evocative ways of playing. Fascinating musical experiments, searches and extractions of strange and weird sounds and other similar elements are the basics of these compositions. Music, created by these musicians has remarkable, impressive, original and expressive sound.

“Seagull Sonatas” compositions are somewhere between free improvisation and Contemporary Academical Music. Spontaneous solos, free and evocative improvisations are gently mixed together with simple and ordinary playing techniques, special effects of electrnics and huge range of weird and strange sounds. The form is free and not stricly based – it’s varies between open forms of avant-garde jazz and has many elements of various traditional music forms. The main element rests the same all the time – expressive, spontaneous and dynamic solos, colorfully illustrated with interesting musical decisions, gorgeous sounds, vibrant and powerful blow outs and other elements. Avant garde jazz improvisations are based on musical experiments, but also have many relations with bebop, post bop, hard bop and other modern jazz styles. These elements are especially brightly heard in piano improvisations. Ola Paulson alto saxophone is based on free improvisation. Saxophonist demonstrates her talent and ability to make inventive and interesting musical decisions. Eclectic combinations, sudden changes, colorful and bright solos, energetic and rapid culminations, virtuosic passages, light and effective glissando – all these and many other elements are fused together in one place. The improvisations has many relations with contemporary academical music and academic avant-garde. That is heard in various sections of musical language, especially in instrumentation. The background is organically and brightly illustrated with sounds of plastic tube and computer processing. Synthetic and subtle sounds, sonic system experiments, altered and modified tones, tape and field recordings, glitch, drone, the sounds of various computer and electronic devices form modern and colorful background and make a strong relation with electronic and experimental music. Ola Paulson is the master of free improvisation – her solos are very dynamic and variable. Subtle and silent episodes are gently fused together with moving, touching, vivid, joyful, light or rigorous and aggressive melodies. The music is all the time in change – it gets new colors and tones, is filled with spceial effects and strange noises. John Tilbury grand piano improvisations are totally based on free improvisation. That makes a bright and strong contrast with Ola Paulson improvisations, which have many elements of contemporary academical music and academic avant-garde. John Tilbuty piano solos are especially, bright, gorgeous and expressive. He tries out new ways of playing, uses dozens of different playing techniques. The music is played with passion and expression, but also has some subtle, silent episodes or energetic, vibrant, agressive and rigorous bursts of energy. Spontaneous and free solos are fused together with elements of various modern jazz styles – especially bebop, post-bop, hard bop and neo bop. All music is based on spontaneous improvising – the most effective episodes are impressive solos, expressive and vivacious melodies, touching and striking passages, marvelous arpeggios, roulades and other similar virtuosic elements. Piano improvisations sometimes are more similar to the playground – it’s filled with many different music elements, has especially colorful and bright musical language, sharp harmony and dynamic rhythmic. All different elements are masterfully and organcially mixed together in one place. The music of this album has impressive, remarkable and interesting sound.
