Yuko Kakuta/ Yukiko Sugawara / Trio recherche – “Got Lost” (Wergo, 2018)

“Got Lost” was released this year by “Wergo Records”. Album was recorded by Yuko Kakuta (soprano), Yukiko Saguwara (piano) and Trio recherche. The Compositions of this album were written by German composer Helmut Lachenmann. Helmut Lachenmann is an academic avant-garde composer. The main field of his music is formed by various contemporary academical music styles and forms. Academic avant-garde, free improvisation, experimental music, the intonations of spectral and concrete music are combined together. Composer has its own and interesting composing style and evocative musical language. The most part of his compositions are based on specific form and interesting expressions – strict and accurate form of Western Europe music is combined together with free and spontaneous solos and unpredictable improvisations. Helmut Lachenmann composing style is based on synthesis between various modern academical music styles – dodecaphony, serialism, aleathory, concrete music, spectral music, experimental and electronic music are mixed together with innovative and fascinating musical experiments. He experiments in all sections of musical language – searches of new and unheard timbres, exceptional attention for inventive and modern orchestration, interesting and extravagant musical decisions – all these elements are the most important elements of his compositions. Helmut Lachenmann composes music for different compilations – chamber orchestras, compositions for voice and piano, electronic music pieces, solo compositions for piano or other solo instruments and many other similar compilations. Various compositions for chamber orchestras, quartets, trios, duets and etc. reveal all the main elements of his composing style and sound. His compositions have expressive, evocative and modern sound.

The compositions of this album are based on evocative and interesting musical decisions. This compositions were written for vocal, piano and string trio. The synthesis between interesting and evocative playing techniques, inventive musical decisions and expressive playing manners helps the composer to create original and effective sound. These compositions have difficult and vivid musical language. Polyphonic pattern, many different layers, colorful and dramatic melodies, dynamic rhythms, dossinance harmony and other elements of musical language are the main keys of these compositions. The composer masterfully mixes all these different element in one place. The first composition for vocal and piano “Got Lost” is based on Friedrich Nietzsche poem “All Love Letters Are Ridiculous”. Dramatic and expressive vocal solos, dynamic sound, expressive and interesting melodies, unusual voice timbres – all these elements are the main elements of this composition. Extremely passionate, dramatic and evocative vocal solos are the main and the most important element of this composition – it brings energetic, vivid, striking and effective sound. Piano melodies are as much important as vocal melodies. It’s not an accompaniment – piano melodies are independent and highly contrasting with vocal melodies. It also form sharp and harsh harmonic pattern and solid rhythmical basement – sharp and unusual dissonances, dynamic rhythms and timbres are gently combined together. The second composition “Streichtrio” was written for string trio. Here this composition was masterfully played by “Trio Recherche”. The musicians masterfully and effectively try out new and modern playing techniques, have a tendency to combine together academic avant-garde, unuisual and specific timbres and fascinating ways of playing. This composition has evocative and striking musical language, colorful harmony, sharp, provocative, aggressive and vivacious sound. Huge variety of different playing techniques and timbres is also heard very much. “Serynade” is the last composition of this album. It’s written for piano solo. Pianist effectively, subtly and masterfully tries out many different ways of playing, evocative playing manners and create dynamic, passionate, expressive and touching sound. All three compositions of this album were masterfully, subtly and effectively interpreted by Yuko Kakuta, “Trio Recherche” and Yukiko Saguwara. Musicians revealed the main elements of Helmut Lachenmann composing style and created original, passionate, emotional, energetic and interesting sound.
