People in Motion + Fred Frith – “The Clit Stop” (object-a, 2017)

“The Clit Stop” was released this month by “object-a”. Expressive, passionate and interesting avant-garde jazz album was recorded by trio “People in Motion” and guitarist Fred Frith. “People in Motion” members are Gianni Gebbia (alto saxophone), Garth Powell (percussions) and Damon Smith (contrabass). Gianni Gebbia is an Italian saxophonist. He’s as active member of avant-garde jazz scene since 1987. Since then, he had recorded and released many albums with various ensembles and musicians – he had played with “Full Metal Klezmer”, Terra Arsa, Zen Widow, “Popoli Dalpane Ensemble” and many others. Garth Powell is an avant-garde jazz percussionist. His Musical career began in 1998. Garth Powell had played with “Bonnie Barnett Group”, Dave Tucker “West Coast Project”, Goodheart Allen Powell Trio”, “Out By Five”, “American Jungle Orchestra” and many other jazz ensembles and musicians. Damon Smith is a double bass player. He’s a founder and owner of “Balance Point Acoustics” ensemble which was formed in 2001. Damon Smith had played with Alvin Fielder, “American Jungle Orchestra”, “Emergency String Quartet” and many others. Fred Frith is an English multiinstrumentalist, composer and improviser. He had collaborated with various famous musicians such as Robert Wyatt, Derek Bailey, “the Residents”, John Zorn, Brian Eno, Mike Patton and many others. Four musicians improvisations always have interesting and extraordinary sound. They try out many Extended Playing Techniques, extracting new timbres and create adventurous sound.

This album music has interesting and extraordinary sound. The musicians try many different extended play8ing techniques and perform stunning musical experiments to extract extraordinary and unusual sound. These compositions are based on experimental and spontaneous musical decisions, special sound effects and experiments, creative improvising and free collective improvisations. The music doesn’t have separate lays or patterns – all different musical elements are combined in one place. Extended Playing Techniques, abstract and short melodic episodes, very dynamic rhythmic, free, wild fast and constantly changing improvisations are the main elements of these improvisations. The highest attention the musicians pay to unusual timbres search and interesting musical decisions. Traditional playing techniques such as glissando, vibrato, wild fast arpeggios and pasages and many others are combined with interesting, new and innovative methods of playing. These compositions are based on avant-garde jazz, free jazz, creative jazz and other contemporary experimental jazz styles. Gianni Gebbia saxophone improvisations are interesting and vital. Mostly these improvisations are based on abstractic and free musical episodes, spontaneous musical decisions, shocking and innovative playing methodes and bright musical language. Musician try out many different playing techniques, his music is full of unpredictable and contrasting episodes, different moodes, characters and surprises. Damon Smith contrabass improvisations always have vibrant, subtle and colorful sound. As same as other instruments, contrabass improvisations are based on very abstract musical pattern which is mostly based on separate timbres, strange noises, creative musical experiments and short melodic episodes. He improvises creatively, inventive and expressive. Fred Frith guitar melodies are very emotional, dynamic and vital. From very sharp and provocative sound these improvisations sudden get to lyrical, peaceful and soft. Especially sharp, rigorous and aggressive solos are full of extended playing techniques, music experiments, shocking and stunning musical decisions and brings to these improvisations heavy, interesting and powerful sound. Garth Powell percussion gently fits together with other instruments – it’s also expressive, very emotional, dynamic and based on various kinds of rhythms gently fused together in one place. Masterful, especially expressive and experimental improvising of all musicians, bright and evocative musical language create gorgeous and innovative sound of this album.
