"Cherish Every Moment" - Exclusive Interview With Foz

We had the pleasure of interviewing Foz and can't wait for his UK debut:
How would you describe your sound to new listeners?
I would say my sound is hip-hop with a bit of pop and additional urban elements, it's honest and thought-provoking and I get a rush out of transforming life experiences into songs so I tend to gravitate towards that style of writing. I'm starting to venture out more into the mainstream market with this release, so everybody will be a new listener in a sense.
Earliest Musical memory?
My Dad and Grandad have always been huge music enthusiasts. I remember they'd play records for hours on end no matter the time of day. One of my Dad's favourites was an Artist by the name of 'Lobo' and his writing techniques are what I feel showed me how to open up in a song. Then my Grandad was a big fan of "Slim Dusty" which he'd play in the car when we'd go camping in the outback, this is what exposed me to rhyming, which has evolved into rap.
Which artists influenced you growing up?
I feel my main influence was Drake, his music style and honesty in his lyrics have definitely inspired the path I've taken. If not for him I'd probably be singing love songs like James Blunt capturing a completely different audience.
What is influencing you musically at the moment?
The growth and progression of rap/hip-hop in this day and age, there's so much variety and sub-genres being created which keeps things fresh and exciting. Obviously, not all of it is for everyone but Gary Vee summed it up best saying "everything works, just have to find what works for you." Moving from Australia to another country and listening to a lot of UK hip-hop, grime and drill have exposed me to expand my musical taste also.
What do you miss most about Australia?
My family and the weather! The winters here in LONDON are pretty damn cold and something I'm not a-custom too just yet, I have to wear about 3 layers of clothes just to leave the crib. Also, Manning's Pies, if you ever head to Cairns you gotta try a Manning's Pie!
Favourite things about being in the UK?
The lifestyle is completely different. It feels more advanced, on time and efficient. It's incredible that I can take a 45-minute flight and be in another country - In Australia that would probably only get me to the next City! Things are always happening, it's always busy and the vibes keep me inspired.
Top 5 tracks/artists from 2017/2018 so far
6lack - 'In Between' Feat. Banks Cashmere Cat - 'Miss You' Chester Brix - 'Cold' Harry Hudson - 'Yellow Lights' Dappy - 'Spotlight'
Favourite place to perform and why?
That's a tough one. Performing in my hometown is always a buzz but I think the bigger you get the bigger the buzz - I've never played there, but Coachella has to be the ultimate for me, the shows and the festival just look ridiculous and something I aim to be a part of in the future!
Dream collaborations?
Naturally, as a big inspiration in my career, I would always be interested in collaborating with Drake. Dua Lipa caught my attention very early on in her career. I like her sound and vibe and can visualize a really great collaboration. Also, Dappy is someone over here who I have a lot of respect for, I really like what he's doing at the moment!
What do you find are the challenges of being a solo artist and in the music industry today?
I think the challenge, especially for me, is it's easy to question and criticise every element of your music, you can't do that! You need to know what works and what doesn't but there needs to be a balance. Not everyone is going to love your music, accept it and don't let the critics beat you down.
What is your advice for musicians just starting out?
Know your strengths and your weaknesses, find the right people who compliment both so you can get the best out of yourself. Getting anywhere is hard, it's staying there that's even harder. Cherish every moment and always believe in yourself.
If you could have drinks with 3 people - living, fictional or historical - who would you choose?
Bob Marley, Joe Rogan & Neil Degrasse Tyson
What can we expect next from Foz?
This is a really exciting time for me, I'm pushing my musical boundaries and trying something new. All will be released on my debut solo EP coming in the first part of 2018 from there I'll be locking down a few gigs to perform in front of UK crowds.
