Some Ford dealers will sell Westfalia’s Nugget

Westfalia is usually associated with Volkswagen, but the camper van specialist converts other manufacturers’ products too. Its Transit-based Nugget, for example, has been around for many years.

Now the latest versions are set to become even more popular, because Ford dealers in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Switzerland are going to start accepting customer orders.

In short-wheelbase form, the Transit Custom Nugget features five belted travel seats, four sleeping berths and a choice of either an elevating roof an imposing fixed high top.

At the rear, there’s an innovative L-shaped kitchenette that incorporates a sink, a 40-litre fridge and a two-burner gas hob. A cold-water outside shower (useful for rinsing off dirty boots and equipment rather than bathing) and an auxiliary heating system are also part of the specification. For added self-sufficiency, a Porta Potti can be stowed beneath the wardrobe.

The long-wheelbase Nugget Plus – which is only available with a high top – is the alternative offering. Westfalia has used the extra 36.7 cm (14.4”) to install a built-in toilet and a foldaway wash basin. However, whereas the company’s otherwise very similar Volkswagen Transporter Club Joker boasts a hot-water inside shower, such an amenity is absent here.

Power is provided by a 2.0 litre EcoBlue diesel engine that produces either 128 bhp (95 kW / 130 PS) or 167 bhp (125 kW / 170 PS). A six-speed automatic transmission can be requested instead of the regular six-speed manual gearbox, regardless of the output chosen.
