Today the Porsche 911 defines the entire Porsche brand. This is quite unlike the 1970s, when Porsche were becoming increasingly conscious of their dependence on this particular model line and were actively developing models to either supplement or replace the 911 line of cars. Produced between 1976 and 1988, the 924 was an example of this. It was intended to be the entry level car for the brand and for the first time ever for a Porsche, power would come from a front engine – rear drive set up.

The design that would eventually become the Porsche 924 was initially intended to be a joint project with Volkswagen. However, the energy crisis put a stop on Volkswagen’s aspirations of building an all – new sportscar and Porsche bought out the design entirely. Production of the 924 though was outsourced to VW while VW chose to make the Golf-based Scirocco instead of an all out sportscar.

The Porsche 924 was initially powered by a 2.0 litre inline four derived from the Audi 100. This was good of 125 hp. Later 924 S cars (1986 onwards) featured a Porsche designed 2.5 litre inline four good for 150 hp. These engines also came with in high powered turbo variants.

The car seen here and listed on Gmund Cars is one of the latter S models. These cars featured components sourced from the 944 including the power unit, the brake system, chassis components as well as parts of the interior. This car also had the Le Mans package optioned which added lowered Suspension, Rear seat belts, Sports steering wheel, Special Alloy wheels, Power steering, Electric tilt and lift sunroof, Sports seats. This makes it quite unique inspite of the 924’s extended production run – one of only 37 black 924 S Le Mans ever sold in the UK.

Though the Porsche 924 was criticised by reviewers and enthusiasts alike for being underpowered and diverging from Porsche’s traditional idea of car making. However, this did not stop it from being Porsche’s bestselling car in this period. It incorporated the high standards of handling, fuel economy, and reliability that is expected from Porsches and the edgy, wedge shaped styling was also praised.
