Ever since the street Style book Men In This Town came out a few years back, I couldn’t help but feel that the time was ripe for a more focused foray into the sphere of male styles that exist in each of those international cities (London, Tokyo, Sydney, Milan and New York).
Rising to the challenge of telling London’s tale is Dylan Jones author of twenty books on a diversity of topics (politics, fashion, music and photography) in addition to being Editor-In-Chief at GQ (UK). A very busy man indeed!
With his current book London Sartorial, we not only get a look at the individual styles that make up a truly vibrant city, but we come to understand the underlying mood and (post-war) history that gives the 21st century London man a real sense of self.
Why London and menswear fit like a hand-sewn bespoke glove relies on two factors, entrenched traditions on one side and a city known for cultural rebellion on the other. What other city can boast an entire street devoted to men’s bespoke tailoring (Savile Row) as well as being ground zero for practically every major youth culture since the end of WWII?
Perhaps this is why the match of unlikely bedfellows has fueled such a revolution in menswear with tradition providing the underling structure and rebellion shaking things up every once and awhile to reinterpret the past.
With its mix of street style photography and perfectly posed models bringing together London’s varied looks coupled with the designer profiles and a handy shopping guide, London Sartorial is a must for any man with a penchant for personal style.
