It’s loud. It’s messy. It’s Lollapalooza. You got to hand it Perry Farrell, the bizarre and quirky visionary who reinvented the American music festival with Lollapalooza, first taking it on the road in the last century and then putting down stakes in Chicago. Despite a firm homebase in the windy city, lolla hasn’t forgotten its traveling roots with editions in South America and Europe.
2018 performers include: Bruno Mars, The Weeknd, Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, Travis Scott, Post Malone, Camila Cabello, The National, Vampire Weekend, Logic, Lil Uzi Vert, Gucci Mane and many many more.
2017 Festival Review: Bought tix on a whim because we were working on the new Apple Store near the Wrigley building and saw them setting up all week long, best impulse buy ever! For the price per ticket ($130 for Sunday) you get to see a helluva lot of performers, basically go to a mini Taste of Chicago and Mosh, Headbang or Rave your f*cking face off!
Stages upon stages upon stages, acres of space to eat, drink, party and for some… pass TF out until their second or third wind. The fest had everything from Rock to Rap, Metal to EDM and more. 2017 featured Charli XCX who put on a helluva fun show with her poppy/clubby beats and lyrics.
DVBBS & the Zeds Dead who lit the night up with hard dubstep, rattle your guts bass and a light show that needs an epilepsy warning attached to it. 6lack, Big Sean, Chance the Rapper, Machine Gun Kelly… all had some awesome sets too. Newport Jazz Festival

Breaking ground since the mid-1950s, the Newport Jazz Festival has a storied history rivaling that of any other American festival hosting artists like Herbie Hancock, Led Zeppelin, Frank Sinatra, Muddy Waters, the Allman Brothers, and Miles Davis. Its current incarnation is three full days of jazz on four unique stages on the grounds at Fort Adams state park in Rhode Island.

2017 Review: The soggy, gray blanket that was the Newport sky wrung itself out on the crowd that had gathered for the 2017 Newport Jazz Festival presented by Natixis Global Asset Management, but the good news was it only rained on the audience for about an hour. Danilo Pérez’s piano oozed melancholic, broken chords, while Avishai Cohen’s trumpet filled loose spaces in the music with long, ringing notes. The horn suddenly screeched—fast and intense. Perez adeptly played more melodic on the set opener “Jessica’s Day,” a Quincy Jones arrangement for Dizzy Gillespie. Clever rhythms, plush sounds, and jerking horns played to the Latin feel of another Gillespie number, “Cubana Be Cubana Bop.” Gillespie, widely known for bebop innovations, was also part of a movement that blended bebop ideas with Cuban rhythms and gave rise to Afro-Cuban Jazz. Perez’s set, dedicated to Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, also included “Pannocia,” “Off Minor,” and “Afro Blue.” Read the full review here.
