CBD Negative Side Effects

It’s estimated that 15-30% of all dogs suffer from separation Anxiety, and that’s not even including anxiety that they experience during storms, celebrations, and fear of other dogs or people. Humans aren’t the only ones living in an age of anxiety.

A lot of pet owners are jumping onto the CBD bandwagon, as Cbd Oil has shown to be not just great for anxiety, but a whole slew of medical conditions. So now is the time for us to be open and honest about the positives and negatives of giving CBD oil to our pets.

Dry Mouth

Let’s gets the comical one out of the way first. Yes, CBD can cause dry mouth or better known as cotton-mouth to stoners far and wide. CBD acts on CB2 receptors found in the body and this delivers a lot of therapeutic effects throughout. But, one of those places where CB2 receptors are present just so happens to be in submandibular glands, which are responsible for producing saliva.

THC will act on CB1 receptors found in the glands as well, so as long as your CBD oil is free from THC, dry mouth won’t be as notable. Your pet should always have access to water, so just make sure you fill their bowl before leaving the house.

Metabolization of Hepatic Drugs

CBD likes attaching to enzymes in the body. This is how it influences activation of CB2 receptors by attaching to the enzyme FAAH preventing it from breaking down endocannabinoids that the body produces itself.

CBD also attaches to the enzyme Cytochrome p450 which is found in the liver. This enzyme metabolizes the many pharmaceutical drugs that are used to treat pets, and in high doses, CBD may affect the enzyme’s ability to properly metabolize pharmaceutical drugs. If you’ve ever heard about people not eating grapefruit when on certain drugs, this is because grapefruit has its own ways of inhibiting the enzyme Cytochrome p450.

Sedation

It may seem odd at first, but whenever you see recommended dosages for different disorders, you’ll notice insomnia requires a higher dose than chronic pain, anxiety, and even Alzheimer’s. This is because CBD’s sedation effects typically don’t occur until rather high doses – usually recommended doses for pets will stay well under.

In fact, it common to see a mild boost in energy in lower to average doses. If you’re giving CBD for anxiety, you’ll stick to these much lower doses, but it you do start upping the dose for any reason, make sure to keep an eye out.

Low Blood Pressure

It’s not often you see a disease where CBD doesn’t help in some way, and it’s even rarer when you see it recommended to not use. When CBD enters the bloodstream it may cause a slight dip in Blood Pressure, because of this it’s not recommended to give CBD oil for glaucoma as it may worsen the effects. There are studies that show it can both help and worsen the effects, but I belive it better to be safe than sorry.

Some people report seeing mild lightheadedness, and this is most likely a result of the drop in blood pressure. Usually, this will only last a few minutes and it’s fairly rare.

Poor Quality Source

Since our pets can’t talk, they can’t let us know if they’re dealing with this side effect or not, but since some people have experienced it, it’s definitely worth mentioning.

Users of CBD oil have reported headaches, which at first seems odd since CBD is well-known for helping with migraines. That was until others pointed out that they too experienced the issue, but after switching to a better quality CBD oil, they discovered they no longer had an issue. Experts are pretty sure our pets get headaches, but since the whole not talking thing gets in the way they can’t confirm. But this means it’s extremely important to avoid poor-quality CBD oil.

As long as you’re taking CBD oil from a high-quality hemp source, medical marijuana for dogs is a great and safe form of treatment with many people reporting outstanding results for their pets.
