CBD has recently exploded in popularity, as it has become more widely available and people have begun to understand its many benefits. CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that is found in the hemp or cannabis plant.

CBD derived from hemp is currently legal in all 50 states. CBD is considered a pleiotropic drug since it produces various effects through multiple molecular pathways. However, it provides many of its therapeutic properties by binding to the cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2 in the brain. CBD also activates many of the non-cannabinoid receptors, ion channels and receptor independent channels.

CBD was originally patented by the United States Government in 2003 as an antioxidant and for its neuroprotective properties. All people have an endocannabinoid system in the brain and throughout our nervous systems. As the government recognized, this system and its receptors are very important to the immune and nervous systems and ultimately the health of humans and animals. This is why CBD has been found to be an effective alternative natural medicine for numerous illnesses and common symptoms. CBD has even begun to be used to treat animals for a variety of ailments and illnesses and new veterinary products have recently sprung up, such as King Kalm CBD for dogs and cats.

How is CBD made?

CBD can be extracted from the hemp or marijuana plant using CO2 extraction methods. CBD that can be legally shipped and sold in the US, like that used in the best CBD products, such as those produced by Green Roads, Pure Stasis and others is produced from industrial hemp. Liquid CO2, or supercritical CO2, is used at a very low temperature along with pressure to extract the CBD while preserving the flavorful, delicious terpenes. The terpenes, or terps, in hemp are essentially the building blocks of smells and flavors and are the same or similar terpenes that may are present in citrus fruits, pine or other familiar smells. The most effective form of CBD is known as full-spectrum and contains CBD, CBG, CBN and terpenes.

What are the different forms of CBD and what is the best way to ingest it?

There are several effective delivery systems for dosing CBD, including oral, sublingual and topical. The typical dosage of CBD is anywhere from 5mg up to 40mg. CBD is most commonly taken orally in forms such as CBD oil, CBD gummies or pills. The most common form of CBD historically has been CBD oil. CBD oil comes in droppers and can be used for vaping or orally by applying CBD drops sublingually. The typical dosage of CBD is anywhere from 5mg up to 40mg. 15ml containers of CBD oil are available in 100mg, 250mg, 350mg, 550mg, 1000mg and 1500mg. CBD oil up to concentrations of 350mg or 23mg/ml can be either vaped or taken sublingually, but the 550mg CBD oil at concentrations of 37mg/ml or above is inappropriate for vaping and can only be taken orally.

Edible CBD gummies are the Fastest Growing Segment of the market for CBD. The added convenience and great taste of gummies have caused an explosion of popularity and have even become the fastest growing segment of the vitamin industry as well. This new form of CBD can easily be worked into the average person’s day to provide therapeutic relief and should continue to grow in popularity. There are several popular brands that can be found, including Pheel Goodz, Pure Stasis and Green Roads.

CBD can also be vaped, smoked or dabbed and some companies such as Green Roads and others have developed products such as shatter, dabwax and even crystal to deliver a potent dose of CBD to people demanding a strong single dose. These come at varying levels of potency, with dabwax at 25% CBD and shatter at 90% CBD, going all the way up to crystal at 99.9% CBD. The shatters have even gone one step further to provide delicious flavors by adding terpenes, like Pineapple Express Terpenes, Blueberry OG Terpenes, and ACDC Terpenes.

Finally, CBD can be used topically as an alternative therapeutic treatment. CBD pain creams have also started to become a prevalent way of treating acute muscle pain and aching body parts. CBD has begun to go into many topical products to act almost as a sports relief product and is sometimes paired with eucalyptus and other more typical substances found in pain relief creams and ointments.
