Baxter International, Inc. introduced a comprehensive guide to building smart Infusion drug libraries. The guide was developed using real-world experience of helping to build drug libraries for thousands of healthcare facilities that use the Sigma Spectrum smart infusion system.

Drug libraries are a critical component for the safety and effectiveness of a smart infusion system. They help identify potential infusion errors before they harm patients. The libraries check the pump’s programming against a list of medications and fluids along with their medically appropriate dose ranges. Alarms will sound if the programming exceeds drug library limits.

Baxter worked with the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) in developing the tool to be used by pharmacy teams, nursing staff, prescribers, and IT representatives.
