Does She Really Have a Migraine?

In our previous blog Why Does He Have a Low Sex Drive?, we at The American Center for Biological Medicine mentioned that we’re wearing blue to celebrate Men’s Health Month! Our health-focused celebrations continue as June is also National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month.

This month’s culmination of men’s health and migraine and headache awareness fit like a square peg into a square hole with our Better in Bed, Better in Health theme for June. We want to answer that age-old question. The one that you might find yourself asking your significant other right after she says she’s not in the mood because she has a migraine. The underlying question that really pertains to her overall health and the overall well-being of your relationship. Does she really have a migraine?

In our Why Does He Have a Low Sex Drive? blog, we consulted with our resident expert Naturopathic Medical Doctor Michael Major for his know-how and knowledge regarding hormone optimization and endocrine health. We’re picking Dr. Major’s brian again for some knowledge and know-how about our own brains and heads. Dr. Major provides in-depth answers to our brain-picking questions to put to rest some rumors about migraines and headaches.

What causes frequent migraines?

Dr. Major says that chronic tension headaches are commonly misdiagnosed as migraines. However, he says pain is indicated at the back of the head or neck and often refers to the sides of the head when describing either a migraine or a headache. Visual disturbances, such as light sensitivity, frequently accompany the head pain. Also, with the prevalence of a head-tilted-forward posture, which is common with routine cellphone use and being in a seated position for many hours per day, nerves going up the back of the head get squeezed by the inflamed connective tissue between the top of the neck and the skull causing the head pain.

What treatment would you recommend for her migraines?

For chronic headaches, Dr. Major recommends tightening the connective tissue in the back of the head with a treatment called Prolotherapy, which works very well for both immediate and long-term relief. Prolotherapy involves injecting a dextrose- and lidocaine-based solution into a tendon or ligaments. The solution informs the body’s own healing response on where to affect change in tissue strength. The treatment is the antithesis to a corticosteroid injection. A corticosteroid injection stops all inflammation and therefore stops healing while prolotherapy causes a local controlled inflammatory response, thereby relieving pain through a healing process.

What are some additional natural remedies you would suggest to treat her migraines?

Dr. Major recommends other therapies, all offered at The American Center for Biological Medicine, that can relieve headaches and migraines including:

  • Manual cervical alignment
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Acupuncture
  • Immediate hydration via nutritional intravenous (IV) fluids
  • Sound-bed therapy
  • Strategic diet modifications

  • Exercise with oxygen therapy (EWOT)
  • Hormone balancing

About Dr. Michael Major, NMD

Dr. Michael Major is a Naturopathic Medical Doctor (NMD). Following a decade-long career as a pilot in the United States Marine Corps, Dr. Major was diagnosed with epilepsy by neurologists at the renowned Johns Hopkins Medical Hospital. His diagnosis came after having seizure number two of what would end up being more than twenty seizures over the next nine months. After Dr. Major became unsatisfied with pharmaceutical intervention that turned his brain off, he researched and found a physiological cause of seizures, applied what he learned, and stopped his seizures from happening overnight. His personal experience drove him to naturopathic medical school and into a profession he was always meant to be a part of. As a NMD, Dr. Major has empathetically chosen to gear his practice toward health optimization through regenerative medicine while focusing on endocrine protocols and regenerative injection therapies. His primary areas of focus include: hormone and endocrine health, regenerative injection therapy, sports medicine and orthopedics, and therapeutic drainage. Dr. Major has a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics from Baker University Kansas, a Master of Science (MS) degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology Ohio, and graduated as a NMD from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine Arizona.
