5 Business Lessons You Can Learn From The TV Show Billions

We all enjoy a good TV show to relax with and enjoy, but did you ever think you could actually learn some useful lessons from one, aside from the occasional moral lesson? Discounting some of the fluff and reality shows, there are some shows you can actually learn something from, and one of those shows is the popular Showtime drama, Billions.  In this show, Bobby “Axe” Axlerod, a hedge fund hotshot, and his firm fall under the scrutiny of a new US attorney, and all sorts of drama ensues. Within all the goings-on of the show are many useful business lessons that the discerning viewer can pick up on. Here is a look at five such lessons.

1.  Winners and Losers

“I don’t lie to myself, and I don’t hold on to a loser.”

If you find yourself surrounded by the wrong types of people – annoying people, slackers, moochers, or for lack of a better word, “losers” – don’t blame them, blame you. You chose to have them around you. Maybe you didn’t consciously choose them, but your actions and behaviour did. So, to have the right people around you – the “winners” who make you happy and can make your business a success, you need to change what you do and how you behave to attract them. Hard workers like to be with hard workers and kind people like to be around other kind people. Likewise, successful people are drawn to successful people. And remember to cut yourself loose from the people holding you back.

2. Mental Health

This is not something that many people realise, but the mental health of a company’s employees does have an effect on their performance and results, and that in turn can affect your business. If they’re mentally or emotionally not ready to work, they will not be able to focus and perform their tasks to the best of their ability, resulting in less work being done or work being below standard.

3. Charitable

Billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates are always being charitable and sharing their wealth. Even “Axe” does by donating a million dollars at a charity dinner. According to his COO, “People who don’t ‘have it’ [admire] billies better who spend on other folk.” That being said, being charitable is a great way for your company to look good. Your employees will be proud to work for a company that does good, your competition will be impressed and try to match you, and your good deed will attract customers who like how you give back to the community.

4. Team-Building

“Saddle up: Body shots and sushi at the strip joint, on me.”

There are many times that a company holds a team-building exercise that is just contrived, superficial exercises that really don’t do anything to increase morale and teamwork and only really make everyone wish it was over as soon as possible. In order to really increase morale and teamwork, find events and fun exercises that everyone will enjoy.

5. Daily Goals

“First I figured out where the sharp action was, where the guys who had a plan were, the guys who grinded. Took the guesswork out of it.”

One thing you can do to help you succeed is to take a look at other successful people in your field are doing on a daily basis. Pick one of their habits and start doing it yourself. Don’t commit only to a goal; commit to a process. Don’t just set a goal to better customer relations, but set a daily goal of calling two or three customers and ask how you can better help them. If you want new clients, don’t just set a goal of getting them, but set a daily goal of calling two or three leads. Committing to a process can better lead you to reach a goal.
