What do you think of when you hear the word volunteering? I grew up in a volunteering and mission-minded family, but it wasn’t until grew older that I realized the impact we had on those around us. We helped at many events and I think my parents thought it would be a good experience for us, and maybe a good way to have family time, or maybe because it was just the right thing to do.

It is important to teach our children that not everyone is as fortunate as we are. It wasn’t until after high school graduation when I attended Youth With A Mission’s training program to be a temporary missionary that I saw first-hand how good my life was. Spending time in the Philippines changed my life and allowed me to have a new perspective on how I could help other people. Gratitude for the privileges (running water, drinkable tap water, toilets with seats that flush) I took for granted motivated me to be more appreciative.

A story of volunteering

While in the Philippines, I slept on the elevated floor in a hut with mosquito netting around me and there were spiders the size of my hand. The humidity was so high I felt as though I just got out of the shower all day. There were many things to complain about, but the challenges I experienced allowed me to become a better person and not think of myself more highly than I ought.

We traveled to Cauayan, about a ten-hour drive north of Manila. The Filipino people were very friendly and glad to have us visiting. Our purpose was to survey the local churches and provide aid to their pastors. I am glad my parents always encouraged me to take a mission trip before starting college. This was a great opportunity for me to grow up and mature.

Giving back to the communities around us

Here at Advisicon we want to be a big support to our local Community and to the world too. We must think global and act local. Community outreach opportunities are a way for us to give back to our community and support the local nonprofit organizations that are helping so many people.
