Saif Ali Khan - Kareena Kapoor Wedding : Bollywood’s Beautiful Bash!

Kareena and Saif have been a Bollywood power couple for what seems like an eternity now, but their love story began on the sets of Tashan, which while not the best film to ever emerge from the Yash Raj banner, paired Saif and Kareena together in what would be a lucky role for both stars; one that has happily led us to the eponymous Saif Ali Khan Kareena Kapoor wedding.

The chemistry the two shared wasn’t very apparent in the movie, unlike the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie starrer Mr. &Mrs. Smith, where the lead pair’s sizzling chemistry was evident right from the beginning to the audience.

Still, the two were quite different in real life, and their relationship soon became the talking point for all and sundry. They officially started dating after Shahid and Kareena’s much publicized and bitter split in Oct 2007. And we guess there was a strong mutual attraction that only served to grow stronger and their love for each other steadily grew and grew.

Five Years In The Making

A much celebrated and well documented relationship ensued for five years before the couple decided that the time was right to finally settle down, with a proclamation of an impending Saif Ali Khan Kareena Kapoor wedding sending journalists into a tizzy.

But before we get into all of that, let’s just take a quick look at the back story of these two stratospheric Bollywood superstars.

A Backstory

Kareena’s family is a rather famous Punjabi Hindu family, her mother Babita and dad Randhir Kapoor are well respected names in the industry, although mother Babita is ahead in that regard. In fact, rumour has it that Babita wasn’t too keen on her daughter carrying on with Shahid, who wasn’t (according to Babita) an A-lister and wouldn’t go on to have the sort of career that, well, would entitle him to be with Kareena.

Sounds convoluted? It’s simple really. Kareena’s dad, Randhir Kapoor, never quite hit the heights that he showed promise for, or that certain other members of the illustrious Kapoor family (including his brother, Rishi) managed to hit, a reason that has been cited for Babita leaving him in 1988.

Considering that Babita was keen on both her daughters (the lovely Karishma being the other, of course) becoming film actresses, she didn’t want her daughter to be with the not-so-illustrious Shahid. Let’s just leave it at that.

Saif, on the other hand, hails from Nawabi heritage. The son of M.A.K. Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore (who converted to Islam before marrying the Nawab of Pataudi), he is every bit of a Nawab himself, and has an equally interesting back story.

Unfortunately, we can’t go into it in full detail except to say that Saif is a bit of a heart-breaker, but it’s important to remember that he was the one who fell for, wooed and planned to secretly marry Amrita Singh before unceremoniously moving on!

Saif’s transgressions which include several affairs didn’t go down too well with Amrita, and after a while the Chota Nawab decided that he had sufficiently fallen out of love and wanted to get on to other things, like Kareena.

The rest, as we know is hist… well, we’re coming to it.

The Grand Shaadi Beckons: The Mehndi Ceremony

October 16, 2012 was the date when the Saif Ali Khan Kareena Kapoor wedding happened, but let’s first start with the sangeet!

Merrymaking and revelry was the order of the day when the families of the two superstars came together to celebrate the new union, and plenty of song and dance was to follow for the rest of the evening!

To be clear, it was a grand celebration and every bit as impressive as you would expect when the Nawab of Bollywood weds the celebrated Bollywood beauty and A-lister par extraordinaire, Kareena Kapoor.

The event took place at Kareena’s palatial residence at Bandra, the terrace of which played host to the likes of Malaika Arora Khan, Amrita Arora, Shakeel Ladak and Tusshar Kapoor who while being good buddies of the power couple, also grooved to some banging tunes courtesy of the slickest choreography by none other than Karan Johar!

A number of extravagant and lively dance performances dedicated to the couple set just the right tone for the evening and it’s safe to say a blast was had by all in attendance, but especially by the couple of the hour.

The terrace was covered to prevent nosy media persons from getting a look in, but if you’re keen to check out who all were in attendance, and how good they looked wearing what, check out the video below:

Mehndi Night

Mehndi was a more reserved and traditional affair with Kareena looking exceptional in a pretty pink saree while Saif looked his usual stylish and suave self in a tux. The mehndi or henna was the order of the day and after tradition had been satisfied, family and friends were treated to an exceptional dinner at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

The dinner was of course a private affair so we, unfortunately, can’t bring you the delectable fare on offer.

The Saif – Kareena Kapoor Wedding – Not What We Expected?

The final and most important part of the entire saga was the actual Saif Ali Khan Kareena Kapoor wedding, and much to the surprise of many a folk, it was a simple registered marriage that the couple opted to go for after the necessary rituals and tradition had been paid heed to.

As we mentioned earlier, Sharmila Tagore had converted to Islam but no such requirement was placed on Kareena (not that she’d agree, we think), and it was none other than Saif who wanted a secular, normal affair (not that we’d expect otherwise).

Hence, the rumours doing the rounds of a nikahwere indeed unfounded and the two exchanged vows at the Taj Mahal Hotel and their wedding followed no pre-ordained, time tested style, and hence there was no saath pherasor anything that could be fitted into a ‘secular’ tag.

Kareena wore her mother-in-law’s ghagra while the two exchanged vows in a symbolic act, as her mother had worn the same ghagra for her nikah to M.A.K. Pataudi, and now had passed it on to her son’s wife-to-be, in what was a very promising start to the saas-bahu relationship.

Ritu Kumar touched up the family heirloom and transformed it into an outfit fit to be worn by a queen at her wedding.

Ultimately, the Saif Ali Khan Kareena Kapoor wedding set a new precedent and shattered any stereotypes and ingrained beliefs that we as a country have come to have about weddings. It was a simple affair that involved two people who were very much in love with each other, and who had decided to commit themselves to each other, that’s all. And for that we commend them.

Kareena went on to add ‘Khan’ to her name and is now known as Kareena Kapoor Khan, which is quite an intimidating name for an intimidating beauty, isn’t it?

Post-Wedding Party!

Manish Malhotra – of course – was the designer of choice, whose burgundy and maroon creation was rocked by Kareena at the post-wedding dawat, and the post-wedding party was a resplendent affair, a grand celebration attended by over 150 esteemed guests.

Of course, Bollywood stalwarts made up a large part of that number and seen were Shah Rukh Khan with wife Gauri in tow, Sonam Kapoor who came along with dad Anil Kapoor, the lovely Amrita Arora of course had to make an appearance and she did just that flanked by Shakeel Ladak, her husband. Celebrated and expected names like Tusshar Kapoor, Karan Johar and Priety Zinta were present and having a blast, and representation from the families was no less in number or glamour as Randhir and Babita (having reconciled earlier) were there to bless their daughter and her husband. Kareena’s uncle Rishi Kapoor and wife Neetu Singh were also present.

The lovely Soha Ali Khan was seen sporting an ear to ear smile, and she was in the company of Saif’s children (with Amrita) Ibrahim and Sara, who themselves were in high spirits.

Here’s a quick recap of Kareena’s wedding outfits:

And some footage of Bollywood’s biggest names arriving at the wedding party:

A Traditional Dawat!

Sharmila Tagore was the brainchild behind the traditional Dawat-e-Walima that was held in Delhi, a custom that is a way of introducing the newly-weds to the rest of society. Whether cricket, politics or Bollywood, the biggest of the big names were all present to enjoy a sumptuous feast at the Mughal-themed bungalow that served as the venue.

The decorations are another talking point in themselves with the gold and cream theme being a super-hit combo. That along with the hanging diyas (made of brass!), antiques and and gorgeous jasmine-inspired floral decoration added a bit of a ‘fairy tale’ vibe to the event.

Ibrahim Palace

The final official event – after a five day extravaganza – was the welcoming of the bride into the family, an event that took place at the “Pataudi Palace,” Saif’s ancestral home. This family affair involved a delicious feast and a bit of respite and bonding as the couple looked forward to their future ahead.

It has been over two and a half years since the Saifeena marriage, and the two look closer than ever to each other, proving that inter-faith, inter-religious, inter-background and inter-anything doesn’t matter as long as you’re Bollywood celebrities and very much in love.
