Book Report: Anatomy Of A Misfit by Andrea Portes + why I'm not reading Portes' books ever again

Tags: book andrea loved

Okay, that title is kinda harsh, but I didn’t really like the Book so much. I actually don’t write reviews for books I gave 3 stars and below, but thanks, AJ (@otakuscradle) for inspiring me to do so. Lol. She has read another book by Andrea Portes and she didn’t like it as well. *cries* Anyways, I created that vector flatlay and I loved it more than the Anatomy of a Misfit (though who has a book that big? Psssh. Just think of it as a poster or something else.)

Goodreads | 3/5

I used to be so much of a book lover before - reading books from random genres without preferences - but I just now realized there really are some books that are just not for you.

I saw it once in the trending list of YA novels in Pinterest and I picked the book right after I read the synopsis from Goodreads - the stories of finding one’s self is always interesting.

The first few chapters bored the hell out of me. The main character, Anika, reminded me of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid. She talks too much as if the book is some kind of a diary screaming to be adapted to a movie or something. Which I think will work well because watching it would be better than reading too much details and redundancy.

Anika is the third most popular girl in school, yet she thinks she’s some kind of an outcast already becoming a vampire or whatever kind of monsters she always mention. This mean girl had done a great job on telling her story in a sarcastic and exaggerated way, and I loved it. But sometimes she’s just too much. Like her saying the other girls (nad even her sisters) are stupid and sluts. *rolls eyes like they’re gonna pop out*

Don’t get me wrong. I know Anika is supposed to portray a horrible character. But maybe it’s not about Anika. Maybe it’s about the way the character’s lines are written. They seem too “trying-hard” to me. Also, there is something in Andrea Portes’ writing that is really off. Some parts are too bold and some needs to be read again just to be understood. I really don’t get her style.

Anyways, I appreciated the book enough that I gave it 3/5. Here’s my list of good things:

  1. She has a wild imagination like I do, except that hers was a little creepier. I am a daydreamer and I imagine a loooot, but at least I never thought of myself as a vampire.
  2. It’s literally like the Mean Girls. And I loved Mean Girls.
  3. Anika is sometimes every girl in high school - an average-looking girl trying to be a chic for even once in her high school life. (Aminin mo na, you tried.)

Well, I don’t know, but I see a lot of readers who loved the book so much they gave it 5. Maybe because of the story itself, but I don’t know. The way it was written has a lot of importance to me.

P.S. Of course I’m gonna give Andrea another chance maybe someday.
