I know I certainly do! Children are so well-versed in technology these days that it is ever so easy for them to end up looking at content that is unsafe or inappropriate for their age. So, as parents, it is our duty to make sure that they never get up to anything that they shouldn’t online. Unfortunately, though, as many parents aren’t as technologically minded as their kids, they often have a hard time trying to stay one step ahead. This was my situation a while back, but after educating myself on internet safety, I managed to come up with these top tips that should help you keep your kids safe online. Keep An Eye On What They Are Doing First of all, it’s important that you keep an eye on what they are doing when they are online. An easy way to monitor them is to keep all laptops, computers, and tablet devices in public places in your home. If they use a computer in the living room while you are also in the room, they are a lot less likely to try anything naughty. You might want to also check out iPhone monitoring software from Family Orbit as this gives you an idea of what your children do on their phones. This software helps you track their call and SMS history as well as a lot more. Take Advantage Of Parental Controls Lots of internet tools and products come with their own inbuilt parental features that you will be able to turn on. Your internet provider should offer these kinds of protective measures and features for your WiFi. For instance, most offer a feature that gives you the chance to block certain URLs. Most browsers also offer parental controls and can help you decide on what your children can see when they are using the internet. Set Boundaries For Screen Time It’s also a good idea to have some boundaries for screen time in place. If your children are restricted to a set length of time for using their devices, then they won’t have much time to deviate from what they were meant to be doing in the first place. Plus, you probably don’t want your kids sitting in front of a screen each and every day! Share Your Rules With Other Family Members And Babysitters If your children are regularly in contact with other family members, such as for childcare, then it’s necessary for you to share all of your online safety rules with the other relatives. It’s also a good idea to let any babysitters or childminders who look after your children in your own home know as well. Then there is plenty of consistency whenever your children are using the internet. Hopefully, all of these great tips help you keep your kids safe when online!
