Skating in KL

When the haze strikes or it’s just too hot and you need to get the kids out and find ways of expending their energy, I find that Skating is always a good option. Whether your child is a novice or an advance skater, here are our favourite venues. One venue is for rollerblading, the others for ice skating and most have adjacent cafes/eating areas that allow you to watch your kids from a safe distance while having some coffee or munchies.

1. Roller Sports World, Bangsar Shopping Center

Rarely full, except on some weekends, this roller skating Rink has flooring that provides a softer landing vs. wooden floors. Downside is, the rink lacks the usual hand rails that your child can steady himself with. But with all that space, he doesn’t have to worry about bumping into people or feeling embarrassed (as kids can do) when he takes a bad tumble. Helmets are not mandatory but we always bring our biking helmets along to avoid the rental costs. There are no roller skating trainers/teachers on hand but I’ve seen the staff help out kids who have a difficult time finding their bearings on blades. You can use your own skates, too. Have a coffee at the café opposite. Next door is the Jungle Gym, in case you have toddlers in tow.

2. The Royale Chulan Damansara Hotel Ice Skating Rink, The Curve

The kids love it here, especially when we arrive in the morning before the teenagers fill up the place after school. At the expense of mentioning the obvious, dress your kids warmly. Mittens, in particular, are mandatory so bring a pair or buy some at the counter. For a minimal hourly fee, little ones who may find ice skating a bit unnerving can rent penguin skating aids to keep them steady. The skates may be a bind blunt so go carefully. Tables line one side of the rink and food can be ordered within the venue (the usual fried or fatty suspects).

3. Sunway Lagoon

Advertised as Malaysia’s largest ice-skating rink, Sunway Lagoon’s rink is busy and in a true Sunway style, located in a middle of a shopping centre. The rink is also host to ice hockey matches, great to watch in the middle of a shopping spree.

4. Icescape at IOI City Mall, Putrajaya

Icescape skating rink is the newest of the bunch, situated in the massive IOI City Mall in Putrajaya. It is next to the District21 adventure indoor park in case you still have energy left after skating.

5. MYNISS Empire City

The biggest and most beaufiful of them all, MYNISS has secently opened at the Empire City Complex. Check their Facebook page for updates on opening times and when skate rental will become available.
