There isn’t that much to do once up at the Genting Higlands if you are not seeing a show or loosing your money in the casino. While it is a pity you are up there in the middle of beautiful nature and cool air but stuck inside shopping centres, the cable car ride is really worth it. We haven’t been to the Snow World but took the kids into the Odditorium by Ripley’s Believe It or Not.
You can argue that it is not worth RM45 for adults and RM40 for kids (RM20/25 with My Kad) but our children actually really enjoyed it – they are at the age where they are fascinated by records and odd facts, and that’s what Ripley’s is all about. I am sure it is shabby compared to the ones in the States, though!
Robert L. Ripley (1890–1949) was a cartoonist, explorer, reporter, adventurer, and collector, who traveled to 201 countries in 35 years seeking the odd, the unusual, and the unexplained. Some of the pieces on display here are curiosities like a barbers’ tooth pulling instrument from the 1800s, and there are some wax models of people doing incredible stunts, like sitting in an oven while cooking a lamb leg. Some, like a video of the surgery on a shark attack survivor, had my sensitive child running across the hall with hands on his eyes but there were enough plain oddities for him to balance out the scary and too gross.
The items on show have lots of text to read so is not ideal for preschoolers or very active kids. The spinning tunnel in the end of the exhibition was a highlight for the little people, and caused much nausea in the grown-ups.
If you are coming from the new Sky Avenue mall, follow signs for First World Hotel and you will get to the First World Plaza with the indoor kiddie rides and Ripley’s.
