Last September, in a New York Times article entitled, “Does Milan Matter?”, Vanessa Friedman, the newspaper’s chief fashion critic, claimed that Milan’s Spring 2018 Fashion Week wasn’t exactly brilliant. Milan’s response has been to plan a fashion week, from February 21 through February 26, with a schedule that promises to best both New York and Paris.
The schedule includes launches, parties, exhibitions, 64 fashion shows, 95 presentations, and 18 other events for a total of 156 collections that promise to light up Italy’s fashion capital. The timing is perfect since 2018 marks the 60th Anniversary of the foundation of the Camera Nazionale della moda Italiana that will be celebrated with an exhibition curated by Maria Luisa Frisa and Stefano Tonchi and titled: “ITALIANA. L’Italia vista dalla moda 1971-2001.”
Perhaps the winds of change are coming to Milan. Two big brands – Moncler and Tommy Hilfilger – are moving from New York to join the Milan Fashion week.
And Milan is responding to recent criticism with strong facts. The fashion film that will open the fashion week, called “the buzz” and directed by the Blink Fish, showcases the new generation of Italian fashion with names like Arthur Arbesser, Fausto Puglisi, Gabriele Colangelo, Giannico, Lucio Vanotti, Les Petits Joueurs, Marco de Vincenzo, MSGM, Paula Cademartori, Sara Battaglia, Stella Jean and Vivetta.
