My Eyelashes are just okay. They’re not too short or too thin. But they definitely don’t have the length or volume that I want. I thought about trying serums to grow my lashes but I heard a horror story that frightened me. A makeup artist told me she knew a girl who used an eyelash serum and it turned her green eyes brown! Since I love my eye color, I’ll never touch a serum because I don’t want to run the risk. So I rely on False Eyelashes when I want a more dramatic eye.
I would say I apply false lashes 8 out of 10 times I shoot photos. Since I shoot about once a week, that’s a lot of eyelash application! Feel free to do the math if you like but let’s just say I’ve learned quite a few tips on how to apply lashes over the years. Here are my top 3 beauty hacks that have helped me in applying fake eyelashes perfectly:
The fit
If you’ve ever gotten your makeup done, you’ve probably noticed that the makeup artist cuts the lashes to fit your eye. I know for me, false eyelashes are generally too long for my eye shape. For years, I was cutting from the short end… that is until my friend An of Haute Pink Pretty enlightened me (she always has the best makeup!).
An suggested trimming the eyelash strip from the outer corner where the lashes are longest. This way, the lashes look more natural. They start smaller at the inner part of your eye and flare out toward the end. It’s been a game changer!
fave falsies
My forever go-to for false eyelashes has been Ardell Demi Wispies. They’re medium volume and length, so they look natural while still adding a touch of glam. I also like the narrow band where you apply the lash, especially if I don’t have on thick eyeliner. I buy them in multiple packs and re-wear them about four times!
the glue
I like to use a black eyelash adhesive so when it dries it blends in with my eyeliner. I also prefer a brush applicator since it’s easier to apply evenly to the lash band. Duo makes my favorite eyelash adhesive.
But my number one hack for the glue that I’ve learned from countless makeup artists is to let it dry for about 30 seconds before applying. If you apply right away it can slide over the eye and create a sticky mess. I usually put the glue on my lashes and hold them while I fill in my eyebrows or brush on bronzer before applying.
the application
Tweezers have become my best friend when Applying False Eyelashes. They make applicators specifically for lashes, but I haven’t tried those yet. I simply use a pair of tweezer I picked up at CVS to put on my lashes. I find it makes my hand more steady while applying. Then I’ll use the tweezer to press down the lash on my inner and outer corners, which is much more precise than my fingers.
