Donyell Malen: The ‘natural goalscorer’ wanted by Liverpool who Arsenal let go two years ago

Liverpool are reportedly keeping tabs on former Arsenal wonderkid Donyell Malen after he scored FIVE goals in one game for PSV Eindhoven.

Netherlands international Malen has been linked with the Reds as Jurgen Klopp seeks a quality forward to provide cover for first-choice striker Roberto Firmino.

The 20-year-old hit the headlines last weekend by scoring every goal in his side’s 5-0 defeat of Vitesse, and he added another strike in the midweek Europa League fixtures to take his tally for the season into double figures already.

If he scores one more goal this weekend he’ll match his entire 2018/19 tally before the end of September, and it’s no surprise top European clubs are keeping tabs on one of the most promising forwards around.

Malen’s rise to fame comes two years after he was sold to PSV by Arsenal, with whom the youngster spent two years.

He joined the Gunners from Ajax’s academy in 2015 and was a star in the north Londoners’ youth teams, scoring 27 goals in 67 games.

But two years later, Arsenal decided to move Malen on and he returned to his homeland where he has made a real name for himself.

But what do the experts think of Malen amid the rumours he is wanted by Liverpool?

European football oracle Andy Brassell joined talkSPORT’s Trans Europe Express to share his opinion on Malen following his heroics in front of goal for PSV.

“He looks an absolute natural in front of goal,” said Brassell. “He’s a very quick and explosive forward.

“There will be a lot of Arsenal fans wringing their hands about this, because I was looking up what Arsenal fans were saying when he left the club in 2017 to go to PSV, and I found an article that said: ‘Worse than losing Alexis Sanchez: Arsenal fans react to Malen joining PSV’.

“As we said, [last] weekend was where he really made his big imprint; five goals in a game against Vitesse.

“What really strikes you if you see those goals is the variety of finishes. You’re talking right foot, left foot… someone under 6ft who is very, very good in the air.

“He’s someone who looks like a natural goalscorer.

“Arsenal, at the time he was there playing in the UEFA Youth League and the like, were happy to show so many of his goals because he looked the business at youth level.

“Of course, you can never really tell if that is going to translate to senior football, but his first steps with PSV are very, very promising.”

Malen made his Netherlands debut earlier this month and capped his performance by scoring against Germany

Asked why Arsenal decided to sell a player who was shining so brightly in their academy, Brassell added: “It was Arsenal’s decision to let him go.

“Maybe they thought he wouldn’t make it, which seems quite surprising.

“Maybe there was a sense he was pushing to go back home because he couldn’t see a pathway to the first-team.”
