Travel Series: Red Rock Country Sedona, AZ

A geological wonder, Sedona is surrounded by red Rock mountains which can be seen in a variety of hues as the sun progresses through the day. From 360 degree breathtaking views, resorts, spas, jeep tours and canyons — Sedona is a hiking haven, spiritual oasis and a star gazer’s paradise.

A vista of the Sedona Red Rock mountains (from L to R): Cathedral Rock; Thunder Mountain; Coffee Pot Rock; Snoopy Rock; Bell Rock; and Courthouse Butte.

Thunder Mountain as viewed from the South upon entering Sedona. The Thunder Mountain trail offers a variety of hiking options from easy to more challenging ones. The trail also provides access to the Amitabh Stupa & Peace Park which is flocked by spiritual seekers from all over and deemed holy by the native people. A stupa is considered to be the living presence of the Buddha and as such represents the Mind of Enlightenment.

More than half a century after its construction, the Chapel of the Holy Cross continues to be a place of wonder, spiritual renewal, and sublime vistas for all who come to Sedona. The most prominent feature of the surreal architecture is the cross that seems to have been wedged between two red rocks.

The massive structure to the left is the ‘Elephant Butte’. Two solitary rock formations to the right are named the ‘Two Nuns’ while the one immediately to the left of the Two Nuns is called ‘Madonna & the Child’ (as seen from the Chapel of the Holy Cross).

More vistas from the Chapel: (Top) Bell Rock is visible to the right of the Two Nuns and is said to be one of the larger vortex sites in Sedona. Vortexes are said to be sites with heavy concentrations of energy spiraling upward from the Earth. Many people believe that vortex sites have physical, emotional, and spiritual healing properties. (Bottom Left) Cathedral Rock can be seen in the distance on the left.

A closer view of Cathedral Rock on the left. This epic cluster of red rocks resembles a Cathedral with two praying hands at the center as seen from the back. The mansion seen at the forefront belongs to Nicholas Cage!

Views while walking down the Chapel.

The rock formations are breathtaking in the sunset hues and a bustling market place dots 89A with numerous restaurants, spiritual, and new age gem stores. There are also several art galleries with unique art pieces, ranging from Native American art to modern ones. Home of the some of the most photographed natural formations, featured in numerous movies, with its incredibly divers scenery and recreation options, Red Rock Country is bound to leave you amazed and in awe.
