João Pessoa, the capital city of Paraíba, was given its name in honour of an ex-governor, who was also the father of the famous Brazilian writer, Ariano Suassuna. By the early 1990s the city was regarded as the second greenest capital city in the world, after Paris.
As the most eastern city in The Americas, it is also known as the “Porta do Sol” (Door to the Sun): The region of Ponta do Seixas is home to the first sunrise in The Americas each day.
