Ecosystem
Commercially, corporate ownership mentalities and motivations are preventing us from having truly useful and personal AIs. Mega-corporations own our PAs and the data, harvesting it to maximize company revenue in the short term, rather than primarily and optimally serving us as individuals. They prevent competitor platforms from smoothly interfacing with their platforms and prevent the sharing of consumer data, creating ‘walled gardens’. This means the consumer has to repeat their background knowledge, history, and preferences with each assistant they use. In turn, this means the consumer has to share their information with multiple corporations while learning and keeping track of the particular (changing) syntax, commands, capabilities, strengths and weaknesses of each system. Corporations are motivated to provide maximum engagement at minimal cost.
Technologically, all major players use similar chat-bot technology as the basis for their AI assistants. They utilize a combination of machine learning (ML) intent classification, plus traditional keyword extraction and individually hand-crafted response logic. There is no inherent understanding of conversational context, no memory, learning, or reasoning. This approach is adequate for simple, highly repetitive tasks such as requesting songs, directions, weather forecasts, or setting a timer but is insufficient for complex conversations and requests. The limitations of today’s AI are inherent and cannot be overcome by tweaking the existing approach. A fundamentally different paradigm is needed.
AI Technology
AI assistants capable of intelligent conversation are the Holy Grail of AI. This is a natural and reasonable expectation of real artificial intelligence. Aigo would expect such assistants to remember what was said, to learn interactively, to understand complex sentences, and to be able to reason and explain themselves. Up to now, this has been a largely unsolved problem.
Intelligence
To better understand why current technologies are not up to the task, it helps to look at what intelligence is, and what it requires. A fair description being: Intelligence is the cognitive ability to understand the world; to help achieve a wide variety of goals, and to integrate such knowledge and skills in ongoing learning. It needs to function in real time, in the real world, and with limited knowledge and time. Human intelligence is special in that it features the ability to form and use highly abstract concepts and to think and reason using symbols.
The Third Wave Of AI
The Aigo Team heartily agrees with the sentiment of the DARPA report, that AI needs to move towards the ‘Third Wave’. The ‘First Wave’ refers to standard programming approaches such as rule systems and formal logic, while the ‘Second Wave’ encompasses the great strides made in machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) since about 2010. It has been apparent for a long time that flowchart-like logic programming will not create intelligent, conversational AI. There exist far too many combinations of natural language.
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)
AGI theory is foundational to Aigo and our cognitive architecture design. The long-term mission at Aigo.ai has always been to create human-level artificial general intelligence: creating software that can learn, think, and reason like we do, but with improved knowledge, memory, and rationality. Our current effort perfectly aligns with this purpose. In contrast, almost all current AI development is Narrow AI (NAI). It is orders of magnitude easier to
solve one specific problem at a time. With NAI the programmer or data scientist can directly engineer or build a workable solution or model without having to imbue the system with that level of intelligence.

The AigoStore is the main vehicle for AigoToken utilization. Within it, community members will be able to purchase PPAs, Aigo subscriptions, skills, knowledge, personalities, hardware, integrations, and eventually other languages! Picture the scene in the Matrix in which Trinity downloads the knowledge to fly a helicopter, and then flies it! Like the Matrix coming to life, skills will be downloaded directly to your Aigo from the AigoStore. Like the App Store, the AigoStore will have searchable categories such as education, entertainment, games, finance, etc
Knowledge
Knowledge is key value to any intelligent system. The Aigo Community will play a crucial role in gathering and curating quality data, both general knowledge and specialized facts and ontologies. As knowledge improves over time, Aigos will acquire a comprehensive common-sense knowledge base. Community members who contribute to the AIP knowledge base will be rewarded with AigoTokens.
Text Versus Speech
Personal Assistants can operate in two different modes: text and speech – with each one best suited for certain applications and environments. For example, a text is preferable for most office communication and interaction (most people aren’t comfortable talking to their computers yet), for discussing confidential information, in restaurants, or on shared transportation. On the other hand, speech is much more appropriate for hands-free usage such as driving, virtual/ augmented reality (VR/ AR) applications, and in the home.
Each of these interface modalities has their own unique technical challenges: Text needs to handle misspelling, unusual abbreviations and symbols, and highly non-standard grammar, while speech-enabled operation has to deal with low-grade signal, mispronunciation, and homonyms as well as other challenges. Speech recognition technology still suffers significant limitations28 in handling complex, open-ended conversation. Accents and background noise exacerbate this problem. The good news is that speech technology is advancing very rapidly, helped by breakthroughs in machine learning and massive investment.
