SystemTools

SystemTools is a peculiar application, which is named to sound like a legitimate optimization tool or windows service. However, the truth about Systemtools is that this is a name used to disguise a Trojan involved in a click fraud scheme. If this Trojan is deployed to a computer successfully, it may modify the Windows startup entries to ensure that the process ‘SystemTools.exe’ will always be executed whenever Windows boots. In addition to this, the SystemTools software may spawn multiple ‘SystemTools.exe’ processes, which are likely to end up consuming a significant amount of memory and CPU resources, therefore having an adverse impact on the performance of low-end computers.

The exact methods used to spread the SystemTools are not known, but it is likely that this Trojan is being distributed via fake software downloads, drive-by downloads, pirated media, and other suspicious digital content. The best way to make sure that threats like SystemTools will not get a chance to affect your computer’s safety is to use an up-to-date anti-virus software suite, which will scan both current and incoming files for any suspicious activity.

While the compromised SystemTools.exe processes are active, the Trojan will open background copies of Internet Explorer and load a list of pre-defined URLs automatically, which lead to Russian pages full of paid advertisements. This action is completed to generate money for the person or group behind SystemTools, and the major problem here is that they do it by exploiting the computers of random users who got infected by SystemTools. Since this Trojan is rather aggressive and uses advanced techniques to mask its activities, it is recommended to eliminate it by using a credible security software suite.
