Teamviewer used in business

Surprisingly many Companies use Teamviewer. I don’t understand why.

Teamviewer is known to be used by hackers and people who have bad intensions. So to install it, just opens another opportunity for those people. In addition it is not something that is easily used like RDP or other options. You often need the other person at the other end to help you. This really slows down the time to support and fix something.

I have used many remote Software packages and my favorite is Bomgar. I think that is the fastest and easiest for the end user. I used that for years and loved it. It didn’t require an installation like Webex or other solutions and it was very responsive.

Some companies use this software because it is free. That is the worst reason to use software. The cost of using software far exceeds its licensing cost. Time is money and companies that don’t realize that, waste lots of money and waste time too.

I have worked in companies that use Teamviewer and generally these are companies that have financial issues. Often when a company is saving money suddenly they are open to using Open Source or free software. I love free software and it often works better than paid software.

So I install the free software and then the computer does better and then we buy the applications that people are more familiar with. Does the free software work? Yes. However people often complain that they want what they are used to. I am convinced that Microsoft Office is only popular because people never tried the alternatives. Even now free alternatives are very compelling for word processing or spreadsheets.

Free software isn’t automatically bad or automatically good. You have to understand the needs of the business to make a good decision. Ease of use, security, ongoing viability of the software all play a role. Free software has its place, it just requires a little thought.
