I don’t want an Orb experience

In Star Trek an Orb experience is a mystical experience where you can relive a moment from your past. Is this attractive to you?

In one episode we saw Kira possibly change the past. It was unclear if she did it or not, because we don’t have enough information to conclude it one way or the other. In fact, one of the frustrating things about time travel in Star Trek is that often it is unclear what happens to those possible past and future timelines that are experienced.

I don’t want to relive the past no matter how good the experience was. Many times characters relieve the most painful or pleasurable moments of their lives as part of the episode. The lesson for the character and the viewer seems to be accepting the past. Let us ignore this idea for a second you have to accept the past, the reality is that we all get stuck in the past.

I have seen in myself and others the tendency to think about the past. All of my life I have seen people wish the past could continue. In my job I see people who resist change. Most people prefer to take the easy route in life and keep the status quo. It is the strangest thing about change though. Almost always change improves things, and we fight things that actually help us.

For example, people hate leaving a job and I would stay at a job far too long and hurt my own well-being. Every time I have changed jobs things have improved for me. Either more money, or other benefits that made the change worthwhile. I am not bragging but simply sharing that change has increased the quality of my life not hurt it.

For many people change will hurt them. The rich don’t wish to change because they benefit from the unique environment we are currently in. Those in power never wish to change and will do anything to prevent it. We see the progress of women, LGBTQ and other groups only happened because of change.

Many people don’t like these changes. They prefer the old way that overwhelmingly gave advantage to the white Male. I am a white male, but I never liked the past. I was discriminated against due to religion and appearance and I don’t support any discrimination. As a kid I was fat, and so anyone who is different I support and cherish. I wasn’t a bad person because of who I was and neither is anyone else.

The past doesn’t hold our greatest happiness and pleasure. The future does. Imagine the future when crime, drugs, and Social Problems are solved. What kind of peace and life will we enjoy then? Even if the world social problems don’t get totally solved, we are slowly making progress in many ways. The present is better than the past, and for those who are not male and white, they past represents greater danger and death.

Don’t think of yourself when considering your choices, but everyone. We all can win and no one has to lose in life.
