StumbleUpon shut down its doors and I had to delete them

I had 72 posts that I wrote about things from StumbleUpon. Today they shut down their digital doors, and I had no choice but to Delete 72 articles.

It is common that people Delete Articles that you link to. For that reason, I started to write my own content because I was tired of the temporary nature of most of those links. In the 10 years I have had this blog, I have written 5,000 posts that I later had to delete due to others deleting a post.

I don’t expect a post to stay around forever, but too often content is very transitory on the web. So everyday I have to delete or relink content. It makes more sense to just take more time and share original content, no matter how cool others links might be.

Those posts were popular. Too bad that failed companies bring down the enjoyment of others. Yes I could try to link them to things that were archived, but I don’t want to do that. It doesn’t make sense to support and send traffic to companies that aren’t interested in maintaining their content.

What else is interesting about posts that are deleted is that often others just copy the contents of the original post. So now you have a case where the original writer or website doesn’t even get the traffic and benefits that their abandoned content brings.

Whatever. I think some things are so classic that they deserve to be in some kind of digital museum. Even if it isn’t, then perhaps an organization could take over pages and just freeze them in the same condition they were in.

We have physical museums for things, why not a digital one? Too often things are lost that will never be appreciated again. Big content companies don’t care. They think its a failure if it doesn’t get thousands of views. However for the right person, even one view can change someones life.

Why is money and popularity the yardstick of all decision making?
