Using unsupported software in business like iOS 12 beta

I helped a client today who had the iOS 12 Beta and I was thinking if this was helpful or not.

On the helpful side I didn’t have to update his phone like I do with almost every person who has an iPhone. So that saved a great deal of time.

On the unhelpful side since beta Software wasn’t tested it may not work for him when he starts to use it. I don’t know, and I told him he was the first one to test it. So I can’t guarantee anything.

To me, if you aren’t IT then having beta software isn’t a good idea. You can certainly do whatever you want on your personal iPhone which it was, but you can’t expect a company to support it. Of course I do whatever is required, but I can’t test all combinations with all devices. So he seemed to understand that and we will see what happens.

Hopefully things won’t be an issue. Hopefully he will be able to do what he needs to do. I didn’t even get a chance to check with the vendor if the software is compatible or not. I was told to install the software which is what I did. Tomorrow I will check with the vendor if it is supported.

If it is not supported, then I will have a talk with him and let him know the risk the vendor sees in having his iPhone not be supported. It might be something as simple as the phone running slower or crashing more. If he is ok with that, then that is his choice. However if it affects the security of the company then I will address it with the appropriate parties.

People don’t always think of the consequences of their choices with software. I wonder what will happen in this case.
