If you have tried an older version of Microsoft Remote Desktop on the mac you probably experienced what I did. Slow, buggy and frustrating to use. Now with version 10 it makes you want to use it, rather than reach for a Windows PC.

Now the only people reading this are system administrators or mac people, so lets focus on what you want to know. Can you do everything you can do from a PC? Yes. Is there an advantage of using this rather than getting a PC? Yes. It was wickedly fast, and it surprised me that Microsoft wrote this. MS isn’t know for writing efficient code, but whoever did this it is one of the finest mac pieces of MS software ever written.

Why am I writing about this? I think this and Office 365 are a turning point for Microsoft. Rather than save their best work for Windows PC’s, I think they are going all out to compete against Google and other competitors. It signals that they are doing their best with everything, instead of protecting their windows cash cow.

It is also interesting that Microsoft is returning to its roots by supporting Mac stuff. It did a mac client that I found interesting. Nothing like that for PC. So it took the advantage of the mac and continued to build on it. I think they were humbled by their phone being such a failure. Strangely even though their failing, they are learning and becoming a better company for it.

In the past I thought Microsoft was an evil empire. Now it seems that Google and others are becoming that. It is difficult for companies to maintain their ethics in the face of the temptation of profits. Very few successful companies also are committed to being ethical. I share ethical companies here and support them in real life.

People slowly learn from the past. It is encouraging to see companies learn from their mistakes as well.
