Technology as a Facilitator of Learning

Traditional Learning depicts the scenario where various concepts and theories are passed from teachers to students (through the usual chalkboard). However, technology is being embedded into learning in a more evolutionary fashion; resulting in learning being transformed into something that is completely different from what it had been earlier.

A platform for knowledge administration: Organizations are increasingly using learning management systems to manage their training requirements. A robust LMS will enable organizations to automate the administration of training programs and monitor its progress. Online training programs can be uploaded on to the LMS where employees can login and access courses. It is very useful particularly for organizations where large number of employees have to be trained within a short span of time.

An information vehicle to explore and support learning: Internet has made learning accessible and easy to individuals. Learning takes place informally and unconsciously as individuals today use the internet to seek information, knowledge and guidance for several purposes. Organizations conduct their businesses though the internet and training through the online medium just followed in the form of eLearning. eLearning can be delivered in many formats based on the infrastructure and the technology available with the organizations. Podcasts, Video Podcasts and mobile learning have further capitalized technology for training purposes.

An collaborative partner to learning: Learning through collaboration using wikis, blogs and online forums has become possible due to the rapid advancement in technology. Members can work on same project though they may not be physically located at the same place. Individuals can interact with various interest groups and share knowledge, debate, discuss and troubleshoot problems, thanks to the technological interface available. Technology has become a collaborative partner to individuals who are keen to learn.

It is therefore not an exaggeration to say that technology has significantly contributed to fostering learning among individuals in recent times. To use technology for purposeful learning, it should be used as a facilitator of learning rather than as a simple delivery tool.
