The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are investing a Salmonella outbreak in eight states so far, according to the New York Post. Officials now warn residents in these states to discard pre-cut melons linked to the outbreak.

Caito Foods, LLC has reportedly issued a recall of pre-cut melon packages due to salmonella contamination according to the New York Post. This includes their pre-cut watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, and other medley products sold to retailers in eight states. The states listed for contamination are Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio and retailers and consumers alike are urged to throw away their pre-cut melon.

These pre-cut melon options were sold in stores including Costco, Jac C, Kroger, Payless Owen’s, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods and its affiliates. While Caito Foods has issued the recall, patrons of these establishments are urged to check the dates where they bought pre-cut melon options: if it falls between the dates of April 30 and May 28, consumption may lead to salmonella poisoning.

This salmonella contamination has led to the hospitalization of over 31 residents in five of the aforementioned states, while 60 illnesses — nearly double — have been recorded so far. Over half of the reported cases have occurred in Michigan.

Though it has not been confirmed that Caito Foods is the cause of the outbreak, the company has issued a recall to ensure the safety of their customers.

An average of one in six Americans become ill by ingesting contaminated foods and beverages each year in the U.S. alone, according to the CDC.

Salmonella results in serious, if not fatal, infections and symptoms, especially in children and the elderly. The salmonella bacteria can result in infections in the arteries, endocarditis, and arthritis. Salmonella symptoms often start with diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever.

Caito Foods has also has ceased producing and distributing these products as the company and FDA continue their investigation,” according to the company in a statement regarding the outbreak.

It is currently unknown whether more states have been infected by the salmonella outbreak. The CDC and FDA are currently still conducting their investigation.
