Dowry demand: Kota bride cancels marriage on wedding day

Kota: A bride from Kota and a dentist by profession refused to marry her suitor after the Groom along with his parents demanded a dowry of around Rs 1 crore on the wedding day on Sunday.

After Dr Rashi, daughter of Dr Anil Saxena, a senior professor at TB and chest department at New Medical College, decided to cancel the marriage, her father has given a complaint against the groom from Gwalior and his parents at Nayapura Police Station on Monday. Police are now investigating the case.

Dr Rashi was set to solemnize her marriage on Sunday evening with Dr Saksham Saxena, also an assistant professor at the medical college in Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh and a resident of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh.

The ‘barat’ for the marriage had arrived in Kota on Saturday and was staying at the luxurious heritage hotel, Brijraj Palace. But on Sunday noon, the groom and his Family demanded cash, gold and silver jewellery worth around Rs 1 crore.

The sudden demand came as a shock for Dr Anil Saxena, who said that at the time of ‘roka’ (engagement) in November, they had given around Rs 3 to 4 lakh in gifts and cash. He also said that they had spent a total of around Rs 30-35 lakh for the wedding.

On Saturday, the groom was given a Swift Dzire car and five gold coins of 10 grams each. But on the day of the marriage, the groom and his parents demanded more gifts, jewellery, gold and silver coins for the relatives attending the ‘barat’, Dr Anil said, adding that, however, they did not directly ask for cash.

The demand for more dowry by the groom and his family would have come to around Rs 1 crore, he added. The groom and his family also started a confrontation with the bride’s family and showered insults on the gifts that were given, he added.

Since all preparations for the wedding had already been made, the doctor and his wife Rashmi narrated the incident to their daughter. Though she spoke to the groom over the phone, he was unmoved and the bride decided to cancel the marriage.

The decision was conveyed to the groom and his family. The father said that he has given a complaint against the groom, his sister, brother-in-law and parents in this connection at the Nayapura police station.

“Being the only daughter, my parents had planned the wedding with all possible luxuries, gifts and cash in dowry. But the groom and his family wanted more money. Seeing their greed, I decided not to go ahead with the marriage,” Dr Rashi said.

“We have received a complaint from Dr Anil Saxena against the groom and his family members. But no case has been lodged in the matter as investigation on the report is underway,” said circle in-charge (CI) Harish Bharti of Nayapura station.
