At the U.S. Amateur event played on Tuesday at Pebble Beach the cut line called for 64 players to advance in the tournament. Well, the problem with that was that after all rounds were complete for the day, there were 24 men tied for 64th. That meant that the final 64 rounds would be pushed back for an unprecedented 24 person playoff.

According to the rules, the 24 men were required to tee off on the 17th and 18th holes at Pebble Beach with the lowest score out of the group moving on to face another 63 opponents later in the day. Taking place at about 4:30 EST, all 24 played the 17th hole with only two players qualifying for the 18th hole playoff by getting a birdie on the par-3.

The final two contestants were Jacob Bergeron and Peter Kuest. Bergeron birdied early on but Kuest was able to birdie after being the last of the 24 men to tee off. Following the 17th, Bergeron was able to emerge as the winner of the free for all after Kuest hit one of his shots into the water hazard on the 18th and lipped out a potential tying putt.

After outlasting such a huge field in a playoff Bergeron is hoping to carry some momentum into the match play that followed on Wednesday. It will be a tough matchup for him, however, as he will have to start up by upsetting the number one seed in the tournament, Daniel Hiller of New Zealand.

Something as hectic as a 24 man playoff is incredibly exciting and something that seems to be a one in a million chance of happening. It would be incredible to see something like this in a major championship but until that one in a million strikes again, we’ll settle for the craziness at the U.S. Amateur.
