End of an Era – EA Sports is Going to Stop Making PGA TOUR Games

For years, one of the most popular video games on the market was the Tiger Woods Pga Tour and the later named Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR. Now, that era of games seems to be coming to an end.

It was announced on Monday that the PGA TOUR would not renew its official license with Electronic Arts, the company that has been producing the premier video game for well over a decade. Rather, HB Studios has picked up the license and will be creating their own game with licensed courses, called The Golf Club.

HB Studios has produced The Golf Club in the past, first in 2014 and followed up by a sequel in 2017. Gamers were fans of those previous games, citing the course design as being particularly well done. They never gained popularity, however, because they lacked the PGA TOUR license. Now holding the license, the game will be able to feature real life courses for fans to play on.

Some of the courses that the game will feature include, TPC Summerlin, TPC Scottsdale, TPC Sawgrass, TPC Southwind, TPC Deere Run, and TPC Boston, with more being available for download later on. The game will also have an interesting career mode where your player will move up the ranks as any golfer would, starting in the Q-School, then moving through the Web.com Tour and finally the PGA TOUR.

While The Golf Club will be able to build replicas of these courses for the game, it is not yet known if they will be including any real golfers to use in quick games or to compete against as there was on the previous PGA TOUR games. Further, it’s not known if Rory McIlroy will keep his part as the face of the video game franchise or if that will also die with the end of EA Sports production.

There are still a lot of questions that need to be answered about this new license and new PGA TOUR supported game but there is a lot to be excited about. And no matter what the game will feature, at least we know there will be a PGA TOUR sanctioned golf game moving forward.
