Safety First, then Vacation

Stay Safe on Your Adventurous Getaway

Are you setting off on an adventurous holiday? Perhaps you’re going bungee jumping in Australia, cave diving in Indonesia, or mountaineering in the Himalayas. However, adrenaline junkies should also take steps to protect themselves in the event of a Holiday accident. Here are some tips to help you avoid ending your adventure with having to file for a Holiday Accident claim.

Do your research

Before you book, you should look into whether the tour operator you are considering is reputable. To check for customer feedback, browse sites like Trip Advisor, where customers can leave reviews of restaurants, hotels and excursions. You should also check whether the tour company is registered in its home country and whether they have the necessary insurance. You should also check their record and see if there have been any accidents in recent years.

At the same time, it’s a good idea to research the quality of medical care available in the country you plan to visit. While some places boast decent medical care, other places may not have quality care available everywhere. You should consider how you would get help in the event of an emergency and figure out a plan, particularly if you are going somewhere remote.

Get insurance

Before you leave, make sure you have medical insurance that will cover you while you are travelling. You may have to invest in extra insurance that is specifically geared toward travellers and will give you coverage everywhere in the world. While this might seem like a useless expense, it will help you remain financially secure if anything happens to you overseas.

Go with your gut

If you find yourself in a situation that feels unsafe, whether it’s a faulty-looking rock-climbing rig or a dark alley in Rio, get out immediately. Your life is not worth a few minutes of looking cool. When traveling, use your instincts and follow them if they tell you to flee.

Keep yourself healthy

When you’re travelling, you’re vulnerable to getting sick, either from food cooked in unhygienic conditions or just being exposed to new germs. Many travellers report stomach problems, colds and even flu-like symptoms. To avoid these minor but uncomfortable illness can take a serious bite out of your holiday fun. Protect yourself by using hand-sanitiser, eating food that has been cooked completely through, and by eating in reputable, clean establishments. You should also find out whether it’s safe to drink the tap water, and stick to bottled water if needed.

Carry a first aid kit in your luggage

A first Aid Kit for treating minor cuts and scrapes can go a long way in keeping you protected while on holiday, particularly if you are in a remote place far away from medical services. It might also be a good idea to take a first-aid course before you depart.

At the end of your adventure, you’ll want to survive to tell the tale. Take the right steps and keep yourself safe and healthy on your next excursion.
