Ok, first update of the tournament.

Arantxa Parra Santonja is giving Francesca Schiavone a very tough time on Margaret Court Arena, the score there is currently 7-6 to Parra Santonja. Parra Santonja is playing well, especially at the net and she is getting good depth on her groundstrokes. Schiavone is getting quite frustrated with the line judges and herself.

Elsewhere Maria Sharapova was making light work of veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn, she leads by a set but Tanasugarn is fighting hard through an injury. Timea Bacsinszky is having a nightmare at the moment versus Monica Niculescu who mixes up the play very well. Niculescu took the first set 6-0.

Lucky loser Simon Greul is taking advantage of his chance and led 26th seed Juan Monaco but couldn’t close out the set, they are level currently. Sam Querrey has taken the first set against Lukasz Kubot and Gael Monfils is in a tight first set with Dutchman Thiemmo De Bakker.

Unfortunately there is some rain at the moment. Hopefully it is just a brief shower.
